Local girls needed to become 'Media Message Detectives'!

McHenry County - Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is actively seeking girls, age 11-13, who want to become savvy detectives in finding hidden media messages which tell them how to think about themselves, what they should eat or drink, and even what they should wear and how they should act!

“Girls In the Know, Girls on the Go” will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Mary Ann Beebe Center in Harvard. Cost is only $2 per girl, includes morning and afternoon snacks, with no fee for adult chaperones. Registration ends Friday, May 20.

To register, contact Kay Flavin at (847) 741-5521, ext. 7130 or kflavin@girlscoutsni.org.

This program provides interactive sessions that will encourage girls to look at media with a fresh and critical eye. Sessions throughout the day will empower girls to understand mass media and how it works, so that they can be in control of this very important aspect of their lives. The fast-paced day will have choices of different fun activities in which girls can participate. All will have an opportunity to practice the new skills they learn about media and the effect it can have on their lives. Nutrition, portion/distortion, and reading food labels will also be covered.

All program activities are provided courtesy of a generous grant from the Health Promotion division of the McHenry County Department of Health and funded by the Illinois Department of Health through the Office of Women's Health.
