Lake Zurich has been playing its best baseball lately, and the latest example of the Bears’ improved play came Thursday.
Lake Zurich handed Stevenson its first North Suburban Lake Division loss, as the Bears won 11-3.
Mike Lutz earned the win for Lake Zurich (9-14, 5-7).
Stevenson fell to 21-3 overall and 9-1 in the NSC Lake.
Libertyville 10, Carmel 9: The Wildcats showed heroics in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Davis Ogilivie helped the Wildcats rally after hitting a home run in the seventh. Then after Max Ebert drew a walk, Nick Coutre slammed a home run to give the Wildcats the win. Coutre also doubled for Libertyville (17-10).
The Corsairs’ Brian Brennan doubled and tripled, and John Salvi and Jordan Kos also had doubles.
Grayslake Central 7, Johnsburg 0: Mark Gawinski tossed 6 innings of two-hit baseball to go with 7 strikeouts to lead the host Rams to their sixth consecutive victory.
The Rams improved their conference record to 11-6, which puts them in sole possession of first place in the Fox Valley Fox Division. Their overall record is 17-8.
“Mark had great command today, especially with his breaking ball,” Rams coach Troy Whalen said. “His last two outings have been phenomenal.”
Offensively, Jon Gurchak swung a hot bat, slugging 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Derek Idstein doubled and singled, and Cam Neely added a double.
Lakes 12, Grant 1: Kyle Noon went 3-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs, and Chris Hoffman added a triple, 3 RBI and a run for the Eagles.
Hoffman pitched the complete game, striking out six and allowing 6 hits. Lakes improved to 13-11 and 7-3 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.
Mundelein 10, Zion-Benton 2: Ryan Borucki struck out seven through 5 innings to improve the Mustangs’ record to 22-4 and 8-4 in the North Suburban Lake.
Chris Maranto doubled twice for Mundelein, and Austin Ozog, Billy McMahon, DJ Lewis, Luis Carrasco and Jordan Bregenzer added one apiece. Nik Gastfield belted a triple for Mundelein.
Round Lake 10, Marian Central 5: Anthony Gutierrez excelled on the mound and at bat for the Panthers. He pitched 5 innings, striking out two and allowing 3 hits. He also went 3-for-4, including a double and 3 RBI.
Ryan Newman went 1-for-2 with 3 runs and an RBI, and Chris Rana went 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Lake Forest 15, Wauconda 10: Jeremy Wagner and Brandon Gibis doubled, and Jack Botheroyd belted a triple for the Bulldogs as their record fell to 13-9.
