Baseball, Lake roundup

Torr Randau belted a 3-run homer, and Mundelein’s baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-0 win over visiting Zion-Benton in North Suburban Lake Division action Tuesday.

Winning pitcher Luis Carrasco struck out six and also went 2-for-4 with a double, as the Mustangs improved to 21-4 overall and 7-4 in the NSC Lake.

Mundelein got triples from Charlie Gandolfi and Billy McMahon. Randau added a single.

Carmel 6, Libertyville 3: The Corsairs scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie and capture the nonconference game.

The winners got 2-hit games from Brian Serio, Blake Bucsa, John Salvi and Tommy Ryan. Salvi and Ryan had doubles.

Brendan Zawaski earned the win for Carmel (15-12), striking out five in 2 innings.

Libertyville (16-10) got a 3-for-3 effort from AJ Schurr.

Wauconda 14, Antioch 8: Tony Kaminsky, Jake Ziolkowski and Shawn Sundquist homered for the Bulldogs, who won their third straight North Suburban Prairie Division game to take over sole possession of first place.

Wauconda (13-8, 8-2) got doubles from winning pitcher Erik Maki and Jeremy Wagner, while Tim Matesi went 3-for-4. Kaminsky and Sundquist were both 2-for-3, while Ziolkowski was 2-for-4.

Antioch (13-7, 6-3) got a home run and 3 RBI from Adam Warner. Paul DeJong doubled twice and drove in a run for the Sequoits, while Joe Gregory had a single, double and 2 RBI. Brett Prather also had a double.

Grant 10, Lakes 9: The Bulldogs played spoiler, scoring 3 runs in the top of the eighth to knock the Eagles out of first place in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

Lakes (13-11, 6-3), which scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, had pushed across a run in the sixth to force extra innings. The Eagles left the bases loaded in the eighth.

Eagles coach Ray Gialo said his team wasted a “terrific” start by Jake Wisniewski, who allowed only 1 earned run over 7 innings. Wisniewski was the victim of 6 errors.

Jake Brown went 4-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and 3 runs scored for Lakes. Paul Kukulka (double, 3 RBI) and Chris Hoffman (triple, 3 runs) both were 2-for-4.

Grant was led offensively by Jordan Villarreal, who went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Jake Ring was 2-for-5 and stole 3 bases, and Brent Spohr was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jared Helmich singled, knocked in a run and scored twice.

Zach Niedrich earned the win.

Stevenson 5, Lake Zurich 4: The host Bears gave the North Suburban Lake Division leaders a scare, taking a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning and heading into the sixth all tied at 4-4.

But Stevenson scored a run in the sixth and hung for the victory, as Tyler Radtke got the final two outs for the save.

Dalsen Ferbert pitched into the seventh for the win.

Brandon Waters homered and went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI for Stevenson (21-2, 9-0). Jacob Sholl doubled.

Lake Zurich (8-14, 4-7) outhit the visitors 11-5 but committed 4 errors. Bears starting pitcher Ben Gullo allowed only 1 earned run (4 total) in 4 innings, while reliever Parker Asmann gave up just an unearned run in his 2 frames.

“You can’t give a team like Stevenson five outs an inning and win games,” Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon said. “Our pitching was again outstanding.”

Mike Schnur was 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI for Lake Zurich, while John Orlando, Asmann and Jeremy Reusch all doubled.

“What picks me up,” Simon said, “is we are a family and these kids don’t quit. They just keep working hard with the belief that our day will come.”

Vernon Hills 10, North Chicago 0: MJ Crowley improved to 5-1 for the Cougars, while Brian Berzanski threw 2 shutout innings in the North Suburban Prairie game.

John Foley, Ryan Knopoff and Collin Krippinger each had extra-base hits for Vernon Hills.
