Lakes’ Hoffman, Kukulka 1-hit Harvard

Lakes pitchers Chris Hoffman and Paul Kukulka teamed up to allow just 1 Harvard hit in leading the Eagles to a 6-1 nonconference baseball victory on Monday.

Offensively, Hoffman and Kukulka also combined for 5 hits at the plate. Kukulka had 3 hits and a double while Hoffman had 2 hits and a double. Meanwhile, Kyle Noon had 3 hits, including 2 doubles for the Eagles, who improve to 9-8 on the season.

Mundelein 16, Vernon Hills 4 (5): The Mustangs ran their record to 19-0 on the season, thanks in part to a 12-hit outing than included a home run by Luis Carasco and triple by Chris Maranto. Carasco, Maranto and Jake Wiegold each had 3 hits. Carasco and Maranto each also had a double.

Stevenson 14, Wauconda 1: Adam Walton blasted a home run to lead Stevenson to the crossover victory. The Patriots also got a double out of Ricky Kern while Blake Fiedelman got the win on the mound. For Wauconda, Tim Matesi had a double for the team’s lone hit of the game.

D-C 3, Grayslake Central 2: After racking up 22 runs on Saturday, Grayslake Central could muster only 2 runs in a loss to Dundee-Crown.

The Rams threatened late, loading the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. But a hard line-drive by Jon Gurchak was caught for a game-ending double play.

Derek Idstein had tied the game in the third inning when he blasted a solo homer to right field and Nick Hosford gave the Rams a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a two-out RBI single. But Dundee-Crown rallied with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

“It’s tough to win on the road in this conference (Fox Valley),” Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. “We did not have many scoring opportunities.”

Pitcher Austin Leggett fanned 6 batters in five innings but still took the loss for the Rams, who fall to 12-8 on the season.

Hosford had a double in addition to his home run while Hosford and Kristian Meehan finished with 2 hits apiece for Grayslake Central.

Jacobs 12, Lake Zurich 3: Finishing with more errors than hits is never a good thing. Just ask Lake Zurich, which rolled up 7 errors to just 4 hits in its nonconference loss. The Bears fall to 5-11 on the season.

Westosha 8, Grant 7: Despite 12 hits overall, including 3 hits apiece out of Jared Helmich and Tyler Gorski, Grant dropped to 6-14 on the season with the loss. Helmich and Gorski each hit doubles while John Schenning drove in 2 runs.
