Baseball / Lake County roundup

Stevenson senior Isaac Greenspon was one strike away from a no-hitter Tuesday.

Libertyville’s Davis Ogilvie then spoiled the fun, singling on a 3-2 pitch.

Greenspon settled for a 1-hitter, as Stevenson won the North Suburban Lake Division opener 4-1. The Stetson-bound Greenspon (2-0) struck out 11 and walked one.

Stevenson (4-0) was led offensively by Ricky Kern (2-for-3) and Michael Martin (double).

Warren 5, Zion-Benton 3: Dayton-bound Kevin Colburn homered, singled and knocked in 2 runs for the Blue Devils in the North Suburban Lake opener.

Pat Kenney tripled for Warren, and Caleb Haley had a single and 2 RBI. Kenney (2-0) pitched 5 innings for the win, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) while striking out three, walking three and allowing 5 hits.

McHenry 11, Grayslake Central 8: The visiting Rams overcame an early 5-1 deficit in the Fox Valley Conference opener, scoring twice in the top of the fifth to pull even at 5-5, only to see the host team put 5 runs on the board in the bottom of the inning.

“Any time a team puts up multiple crooked numbers (McHenry also scored 3 in the first), you are in for a long day,” said Rams coach Troy Whalen. “I’m proud of the way our kids battled back, and we even had our chance in the last inning, but you can’t walk six guys, commit multiple errors and strike out seven times yourself, and expect to win in this league. This conference is just too good.”

Austin Miller had a double and single, and Austin Leggett also doubled for the Rams, who were outhit 10-6.

Grayslake Central (3-2) hosts the Warriors on Thursday.

Lakes 10, Deerfield 6: Paul Kukulka aided his own cause by hitting a pair of 2-run homers, as the Eagles won the nonconference game.

Kukulka (1-0) pitched 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs while striking out four and walking two.

Jake Brown also hit a 2-run homer for Lakes and finished 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored.

Vernon Hills 16, Antioch 2: Tyler Feece pitched 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 2 runs, and Chris Marras went 4-for-5 with a double and 5 RBI, as the visiting Cougars captured the North Suburban Prairie opener.

Chris Argianas set the tone for Vernon Hills with a leadoff, two-strike double. Argianas and Anthony Mazza each reached base four times. Eric Lang and Ryan Knopoff had 3 and 2 RBI, respectively. M.J. Crowley and Steve Nelson both got on three times.

Feece improved to 3-0.

Paul DeJong homered for Antioch.

The two teams rematch today at Vernon Hills.

Grayslake North 3, CL South 1: C.J. Bailey doubled twice, as the Knights won their Fox Valley opener.

Carl Russell and Brandon Ferm (double) also had 2 hits for Grayslake North (2-5).

Wauconda 8, Round Lake 2: Erik Maki, Jeremy Wagner and winning pitcher Tim Matesi all doubled in the North Suburban Prairie opener.

Matesi pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out six. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate, helping Wauconda improve to 4-2 overall.

Round Lake freshman Ryan Newman allowed just 1 earned run over 5 innings, striking out nine and walking two.
