Harper’s Fischer finds future at Concordia
Harper College outside hitter Amy Fischer (Lake Park) has verbally committed to the women’s volleyball program at Concordia University in Chicago.
Fischer will sign a letter of intent sometime over the next two or three weeks.
“Everybody was welcoming — they made me feel special,” Fischer said of the Concordia’s coaching staff.
Fischer choose the Cougars over Northern Athletics Conference rival Aurora University.
“I felt like I was already part of the Concordia community,” Fischer said of her campus visit.
Fisher e-mailed YouTube highlights of her volleyball skills to 150 schools. Several of them contacted Fischer with various levels of interest, including three Division I programs: Boise State, South Carolina State and the University of Denver.
“It was easier to get my name out there,” Fischer said of the video approach.
Fischer will fill the same outside hitter/defensive specialist roles she did for Harper coach Bob Vilsoet.
“I am so proud of her,” Vilsoet said.
“He’s a great coach — I learned so many different things,” Fischer said of Vilsoet.
Concordia finished last season with an 11-16 overall record and finished in a three way tie for ninth in the Northern Athletics Conference with a 4-8 mark.
Fisher plans to major in education with hopes of coaching, and teaching physical education. She plans to transfer credits earned and to ultimately graduate from college with multiple degrees.
Fischer’s family played a big part in her decision to stay close to home.
“I am close with my family,” she said. “I wanted to stay local so they (my family) can still come to my games.”
