MSL roundup: Fremd gets back on winning track
Senior Justin Wallace rushed for 166 yards on 31 carries, adding a 1-yard scoring plunge in leading Fremd (1-3) to a 26-14 Mid-Suburban League crossover victory at Buffalo Grove.
Freshman quaterback Sam Beutler entered the game after one series and went 8-for-11 with 139 yards and one scoring toss. Beutler's 1-yard scoring dive with 4:12 remaining put the Vikings up 26-7.
Buffalo Grove (2-2) senior quarterback Mike Garrity sat out the game with a slight concussion suffered during last week's win at Conant.
Junior Rich Zirngibl completed 11-of-22 passes for 113 yards and added 70 yards rushing. His 4-yard scoring run with 1:07 remaining narrowed the score to 26-14.
Barrington 24, Wheeling 7: Barrington improved its record to 4-0 behind running back Chase Murdock's 3 touchdowns and Ben LeCompte's turnover collection (interception and fumble recovery) to defeat Wheeling 24-7 in a Mid-Suburban crossover game at Barrington Community Stadium.
The Broncos didn't look sharp in the passing game (73 yards), and Wheeling (1-3) looked to give them a dogfight early on. Momentum looked to go Barrington's way midway through the second quarter after Jeremy Rafidia recovered a muffed punt from deep on the Wildcat 45. Six plays later, a second TD from Murdock's (133 yards) gave Barrington a 14-0 lead with 3:30 remaining in the half.
Wheeling scored with just 38 seconds left in the half on a 7-play, 80-yard drive highlighted by Kyle Batiz' 55-yard catch and Eddie Scanlon's 5-yard scamper to pull within 7.
But Barrington's defense proved too much to overcome for the Wildcats in the second half, as the Broncos held Wheeling to just 84 total yards in the final two quarters. LeCompte recorded his fourth pick in two weeks and recovered a fumble as Barrington's defense came together on a night where the offense had some trouble. Murdock added one score in the third quarter to seal it.
Rolling Meadows 28, Hoffman Estates 0: Rolling Meadows came out with an inspired defensive effort in a 28-0 victory over visiting Hoffman Estates.
The Mustangs' defense picked off two Hawks passes and recovered 4 Hoffman Estates fumbles. Ryan Gundersen got one of the picks, and also caught 2 touchdown passes.
Meadows sophomore QB Jack Milas, in his first varsity start, fired 4 touchdown passes in the win.
Prospect 41, Palatine 27: Peter Bonahoom rushed for 190 yards on 16 carries and returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown as visiting Prospect stopped Palatine 41-27.
Hersey 34, Conant 7: The Huskies improved to 3-1 with the MSL crossover win. Conant dropped to 2-2.
