Celebrate your special day by recognizing God's blessings
"Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - and how well I know it -"
- Psalm 139:14 (NLT)
I looked over the flowers that were on sale in the store. The brilliant red roses caught my attention and are among the flowers that I love best. I looked through the group for a couple that had vibrant color and leaves that weren't torn.
"Here's two that look flawless to me. I'll get these two for Jeff's special day."
Birthdays have always been a special time of celebration in our family. When the kids were little, the moment they jumped out of bed we started the day with a greeting of "Happy Birthday!"
As the tinkling sound of cereal filled the bowls and the toast popped up, we discussed over breakfast the details of the activities to follow the rest of the day. Oftentimes, these activities included passing out cupcakes to classmates, favorite meals for dinner, and a party with family and friends.
May and June are a month in which we celebrate several birthdays in our family. My husband's is this week. Mine is two weeks later.
We celebrate the whole two weeks, starting with his and ending with mine. I have many friends whose birthdays are sandwiched in-between and around our birthdays. I love to hear the variety of ways others spend their exceptional day.
You will find days of celebration woven all through the pages of the Bible. They surround dates of things that are honorable and important to God and cement a time of remembrance to these things for us.
God intended joy and celebration to be an important part of our lives, as long as the festivities do not get out of hand, become self-indulgent or sinful.
Joy and celebration with God at the center gives us a break from the ordinary, lifts our spirits, and directs our thoughts to the beauty and true meaning of our lives. Birthdays can even be a new starting point, like New Year's resolutions.
God gave each of us a birth date. As we celebrate our special dates, let us remember to offer up to God a prayer and praise for him for who he created us to be. Many blessings to my readers on their special day!
