Barrington's balance too much for Schaumburg

How deep is the 2010 Barrington boys volleyball team?

Check out the numbers from Game 2 of Tuesday night's 26-24, 25-13 Mid-Suburban West victory over Schaumburg.

Seven different Broncos - Ben Koziol, Chris Ganzer, Matt Logue, Joe Davidson, TJ Shanahan, Rob Weidner and Tommy Leonard - put down kills in the deciding game of the home team's victory, while sophomore Taylor Ganzer pitched in with a couple of aces.

And the steady statistics sheet doesn't end there. Logue, Davidson, Shanahan and Leonard led the team with 5 kills apiece in the emphatic win.

"Our goal since the beginning of the year has been to be more balanced," said Barrington coach Rob Ridenour. "It's nice to see all the guys playing so well at the same time."

"We're a relatively young team, and the challenge for us is to stay consistent."

Schaumburg (9-11, 3-2), led by senior hitter Sanup Desai (7-of-7 on serve, 3 kills), was right at the doorstep throughout the first and most of the second game but watched the Broncos run off 12 of the final 14 points to seal the victory.

"This game has been typical of our entire season," said Saxons coach Kyle Reid. "We have some good moments, but then we have some lulls. One of these days we hope to put a full match together.

"We played well in the first game and at the start of the second, but then we had some bad calls and bad plays - and they (Barrington) took the momentum and ran away with it."

Barrington (10-6, 4-1) middle hitter Shanahan, a 6-foot-4 junior, had a couple of crucial tips near the end of game one to help turn the tide.

A couple more well-placed kills from the junior, who added 5 blocks to his stat totals, broke open a close Game 2 and helped the Broncos run away with the win.

"I thought TJ in the middle played an incredible match for us tonight," said Ridenour. "He managed to completely change the course of a close game with his blocking."

Ganzer added 10 assists for Barrington from his setter position.

"This is a talented team with a lot of depth," said Davidson, a senior Broncos outside hitter. "We're experienced but we also have a lot of sophomores that are playing great - Tommy (Leonard) is quite a force on offense.

"When we work hard, and come out with energy, we get wins. We're not playing as well as we think we should be, but this was a step in the right direction. We can play even better."

Libero Omar Gamboa, also a senior, echoed his classmates' sentiments.

"We're in a good place," said Gamboa, "but we're not quite where we want to be."

Prospect d. Meadows: Prospect (10-5, 4-1) had to rally for a 20-25, 25-17, 25-22 MSL East victory over visiting Rolling Meadows (5-6, 1-4).

Kyle Weiner (16 kills), Scott Shewmon (14 kills, 3 blocks) and Jack Nickle (11 kills, 2 blocks, 7 digs) led Meadows.

Buffalo Grove d. Wheeling: Mike Jambrone had 9 kills and Nick Baronti had 6 kills for MSL East leader Buffalo Grove (16-2, 5-0). Lukas Karch had 29 assists.

Fremd d. Conant: Brian Allen and Jeff Chappell produced 10 kills apiece as the host Vikings bounced back from a 25-18 loss in Game 1 to win 25-13, 25-15 in MSL West play.

Justin Sohn was 11-of-12 serving with 2 aces, Kolbe Stenoien had 9 digs and setter Steve Maring produced 27 assists for Fremd (10-5, 4-1).

Zach Lindeman had 8 kills and Vince Petrella and Andy Dewar had 7 kills apiece for Conant (5-12, 1-4).

Elk Grove d. Hersey: Szymon Gierut had 14 kills and teammate Scott Siwicki had 13 as Elk Grove outlasted Hersey 25-22, 18-25, 25-21 in an MSL East matchup.

Jeff Miceli bolstered the Grens (9-9, 3-2) with 31 assists, and Gierut, Siwicki, Don Gardner and Dan Roberts had 3 blocks apiece.

Brandon Klein and Paul Kolesar had 14 and 8 kills respectively for Hersey and Matt Cayton had 30 assists.

Carmel d. St. Viator: The Lions were denied in East Suburban Catholic Conference play in Mundelein. Junior setter Patrick Ryan was 55-for-55 setting with 15 assists and Jon Mayyou and Richard McLoughlin both had 4 kills but Carmel prevailed 25-20, 25-23.
