Feb. 5Tot Shabbat: Celebrate Shabbat with your preschooler. A Tot Shabbat service will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5. Children and their families are invited to join Rabbi Paul Cohen and Cantor Amy Zussman on the bimah for songs, storytelling and blessings. The program is held at Temple Jeremiah's newly renovated, handicapped accessible sanctuary at 937 Happ Road, Northfield. Everyone is welcome. Before cheering on the Colts or the Saints, they will be leading worship and collecting monetary donations from the congregation to fight hunger. They are also collecting nonperishable food items from the Mundelein community. They previously passed out grocery bags to homes in the immediate neighborhood of the church to fill with food items, and will be retrieving the bags and taking them to the Fremont Township Food Pantry. This is part of a national youth-led effort to fight hunger and poverty that started in 1990. Community Protestant is located at 418 N. Prairie Ave. in Mundelein. (847) 566-4000.Feb. 8Paczki Day: The IRS Churches of Antioch have paczkis for All Paczki Day, Feb. 16, to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. The paczki is a jelly doughnut, a Bismarck-type pastry that is popular in Eastern European communities. Paczkis are $10 a dozen. Orders must be made by Monday, Feb. 8. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, is having a monthlong event is to raise money for Jeremiah Krueger, the great-grandson of the Rev. Harold and Ruth Krueger, and the grandson of Paul and Chris Krueger, St. Matthew members. Baby JJ has a very rare skin disorder that is called epodermolytic hyperkeratosis. It is a disorder that doesn't allow the baby's skin to stay on his body. He basically is like a burn victim who will never heal. One in 300,000 babies are born with this rare disease. Special care from Mayo Clinic is not covered by his parent's insurance. A committee has been formed to raise funds for this mission, with Thrivent Financial matching funds up to $5,000. Two teachers: Julie Szwedo Noigebauer of Immaculate Conception School on Talcott in Chicago, and Sr. Marion O'Connor, O.P., Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette, are National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) winners, and Rev. Patrick Lee, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish on North Park in Chicago, is the NCEA Distinguished Pastor recipient. Twenty-five educators will also be acknowledged for their outstanding work at Catholic elementary and secondary schools.Matrix: The film, "The Matrix," described a future in which reality, as perceived by humans, is actually a simulated reality known as the Matrix. David Strulowitz, who has immersed himself in the study and teaching of Jewish spirituality, will correlate the storyline in this film to Judaism at the program, "The Matrix: Science Fiction or Jewish Spiritual Reality?" at 10 a.m., Sun., Feb. 21, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. Strulowitz will make analogies between the popular sci-fi film and Judaism's belief in both a physical world and a spiritual realm which we don't perceive with our senses. Together the class will explore the foundations of Jewish spirituality, Jewish values and the Jewish people. Topics will include theology, life cycles, ritual and Reform Judaism. The fun begins with the temple's 7th Annual Shushan Shuffle 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Cost is $18 per participant with proceeds benefiting SHALVA, an agency dedicated to preventing domestic abuse. Advance registration is required. At 11 a.m., a talented troupe of Temple Jeremiah staff and board members will present their own rendition of the Purim story, complete with greggers (noisemakers) and a retelling of the Megillah (an account of the events of Purim). At 11:30 a.m., join Tevye, Golde, Motel, Yente and a cast of other colorful characters from "Fiddler on the Roof" for an afternoon of fun including karaoke, moonwalk, carnival games, lunch and treats. Be sure to wear your favorite costume. Proceeds benefit the temple's Youth Department.
