Martino helps Wauconda win twice

Wauconda's girls basketball team won a pair of games Saturday to improve to 3-0 in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

Playing at Marengo, the Bulldogs defeated Crystal Lake Central 30-18 before edging Marengo 36-32.

Wauconda (8-3) resumes the tournament Tuesday night at McHenry.

Against Crystal Lake Central, Kate Martino had 10 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The Bulldogs trailed 4-2 after one quarter but then outscored the Tigers 14-0 in the second and 8-6 in the third.

Erinn Hellweg added 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Tammy Ellis also had 6 points as well as 4 rebounds.

Against Marengo, Ellis scored a season-high 15 points and also had 5 steals. Martino also played well again, totaling 13 points and 9 steals. Hellweg and Roslyn Summerville each posted 4 points and 6 rebounds.

Warren 48, Grayslake Central 45: At Warren, in opening-round action of the Blue Devil Classic, the host Blue Devils pulled off their second impressive win in as many nights.

Grayslake Central (8-2) had won its last eight games.

A night after topping Lake Zurich, Warren (4-8) built a 34-27 cushion by halftime and eventually led by 13 points in the fourth quarter. Grayslake Central got within two but no closer.

Alexis Leneau scored 14 points to lead the Blue Devils, while Morgan Garrett and Jessica Prince added 9 and 8 points, respectively.

Rebekah Llorens led the Rams with 15 points, while Maddy Miller had a season-high 13 (two 3-pointers).

Stevenson 53, Barrington 34: At Stevenson, Michelle O'Brien scored 14 points and Kelsey Simon contributed 13, as the Patriots won the Suburban Holiday Showcase game.

Stevenson (8-4) led 22-8 after one quarter, but Barrington was within 40-34 after three. The Patriots then outscored the Fillies 13-1.

McKinley Imus added 10 points for Stevenson and Anna Morrissey had eight.

Trinity 44, Lake Zurich 37: At Stevenson, the Bears dropped their third in a row to fall to 5-7.

Zion-Benton 42, Mundelein 35: At Mundelein, the Day-1 finale of the Lady Mustangs Holiday Classic saw the Zee-Bees rally from a 16-5 deficit after one quarter.

The game counted in the North Suburban Lake standings, so Zion-Benton (10-2) is now 5-0 in the division, while Mundelein (6-7) is 2-4.

Sophomore Octavia Crump had 25 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals for the Zee-Bees, who outscored Mundelein 37-19 in the final three quarters to capture their seventh straight win.

"This is the kind of game that in the past dozen years Zion-Benton would have never been able to pull out - a defensive struggle," Zee-Bees assistant coach Frank Mattucci said.

Juanita Robinson added 7 points for Z-B, despite first-half foul trouble.

Mundelein got 12 points from Jessi Bjerning and 10 from Olivia Dunigan.

Grayslake North 54, Round Lake 21: At Richmond-Burton, Kinsey Siler had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals for the Knights in their first of two games.

Brooke Sauer added 9 points and Katie McGrath had 6 points and 9 rebounds. Allie Ceglarek chipped in 4 steals and 4 points.

Round Lake got 7 points from Chanae Brown.

Grayslake North 60, Richmond-Burton 47: The Knights won their second game of the day, as Kinsey Siler had 23 points.

Katie McGrath added 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for Grayslake North (6-7). Allie Ceglarek had 11 points.

Grayslake North played both of its game Saturday without three-year starter Lauren Erickson.

Vernon Hills 49, Glenbrook North 39: At Mundelein, Alana Coy scored 11 points (three 3-pointers) and Jessica Schwartz added 10 for the Cougars, who rallied from a 21-13 halftime deficit.

Vernon Hills (10-1) was shut out 9-0 in the second quarter but then outscored the Spartans 13-10 in the third and 23-8 in the fourth.

Jessica Feece and Meri Bennett-Swanson chipped in 7 points apiece for the Cougars. Feece made two 3s, as did Abby Springer.

CL South 45, Round Lake 20: At Richmond-Burton, the Panthers lost their second game of the day.

Krystal Pitts had 7 points for Round Lake.

Rockford Auburn 57, Grant 36: At Mundelein, Tierny Austin scored 18 points for Auburn.

Grant (5-7) got 18 points from Heather Chapman.
