Calls for volunteers and events that benefit the public, such as social service clubs, call for donations of items, blood drives, bone marrow drives, food pantry drives, food giveaways, etc. Deadline is two weeks before event date.

Nov. 4

Blanket making: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, Lakeside Lodge, 3561 Melody St., Mundelein. The Chaverot Group of Hadassah North Shore Chapter will meet to make fleece blankets for Hadassah hospital. Cash for Candy: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Thursday, Nov. 5, Lake County Dental Care, 908 S. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. For ever pound of candy they bring in, Lake County Dental Care will give children $1 and make a $2 donation to Libertyville's Youth and Family Counseling. The candy will then be shipped as a gift to troops overseas. No appointment is necessary.

Nov. 7

Kate Jacobs: 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, Warren-Newport Public Library, 224 N. O'Plaine Road, Gurnee. Kate Jacobs, author of "The Friday Night Knitting Club," will appear. Fans are invited to bring their knitting to the event for a knit-in. Help Jacobs and Warming Families reach their goal of donating 25,000 hats to the homeless in 2009 by bringing a knitted or crocheted item to the event. Recycle-O-Rama: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, Warren-Newport Public Library, 224 N. O'Plaine Road, Gurnee. Residents are invited to recycle cell phones, inkjet cartridges, eyeglasses, gym shoes, CDs and DVDs, plastic bags, wine corks, keys, beads, buttons and Nabisco cookie wrappers. There will also be a swap for music, movies, games, books, puzzles, yarn and fabric. There will be crafts with Artworks Children's Museum as well as door prizes and giveaways. Thank a Vet Sale: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, Lake Villa District Library, 1001 E. Grand Ave., Lake Villa. Donations of gently-used books, DVDs or other military history material are appreciated. All proceeds received from the sale, plus donations, will be used to benefit veterans through the VFW. Grant Township Food Pantry: Drop items off from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, Grant Township Supervisor's office, 26725 W. Molidor Road, Ingleside. The pantry food is running low; nonperishable items such as canned goods, peanut butter, pancake mix, syrup, etc. are needed. Items such as toiletries would also be greatly appreciated.

Crafters needed: Crafters are needed for the "A Little Touch of Heaven Craft Faire," which will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Annunciation of Our Lady Episcopal Church, 5725 Stearns School Road, Gurnee. For exhibitor information and applications, call Virginia Bosserman, at (847) 212-7619.

Military support drive: Through Nov. 15, Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. The library will collect a variety of items to send to military personnel serving in the Middle East. Community Partnership Coat Drive: Through Monday, Dec. 14, Devon Bank, 561 N. Milwaukee Ave.; America's Market, 9 Huntington Lane; Wheeling Park District Community Recreation Center, 333 W. Dundee Road, all in Wheeling. The Wheeling Park District in cooperation with School District 21 is holding its annual coat drive. Tree and bench donations: The Vernon Hills Park District offers residents and neighbors the opportunity to honor a special person or commemorate an event by donating a tree or bench in a district park. Trees range from $225-$475 depending on the species selected, and can be personalized with a bronze plaque, which is sold at cost. Benches may be purchased for donation at a cost of $700, and personalized with a bronze plaque. Prices for plaques start at $70. Pooch Pantry: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Lake County Animal Control, 29278 N. Highway 83, Mundelein. Accepting donations of dry and canned dog and cat food, treats and domestic bird food; gift cards for PetSmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus; cat litter; resealable plastic bags; and pet welfare goods such as bowls and toys. Eli Skinner Chapter, NSDAR: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is seeking volunteers to make wool caps for the troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and South Korea. Wool head covering which can be worn under the Kevlar helmet provides warmth to the head and neck, but does not restrict vision. Patterns are available at www.geocities.com/helmetliner. Allendale Association: A not-for-profit children's facility in Lake Villa, looking for qualified volunteers to work directly with children or on other projects. Help a child develop positive relationships with adults, share gardening knowledge in the vocational horticultural center, evaluate a student's Individual Education Plans and meet with the child's therapeutic team, work in the thrift store, or help in other ways.
