Oct. 16

Clothing donations needed: 3:30-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, Mundelein High School, 1350 W. Hawley St, Mundelein. Clothing donations are needed for the school's student leadership organization's rummage sale. Clean clothing with suggested prices should be dropped off in the cafeteria. Oct. 18

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: Registration at 8 a.m., 5K walk at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, Independence Grove, 16400 W Buckley Road, Libertyville. Noncompetitive 5K walk to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about their cancer risk, and raise money to fund research and support programs. Coats for Vets: Through Saturday, Oct. 31, Zengeler Cleaners, 539 E. Park Ave., Libertyville, or 1401 Peterson Road, Libertyville. Libertyville Rotary Sunrise is hosting a "Coats for Vets" collection drive to collect winter coats, jackets and other seasonal apparel for veterans in the northern Illinois area. Donations can be dropped off at either of Zengeler Cleaners Libertyville stores or given to any member of Libertyville Rotary Sunrise. Toy drive: Throughout October, Mundelein High School, 1350 W. Hawley St, Mundelein. A used toy drive for the Fourth Brigade Fourth Infantry Division field hospital in Afghanistan. Winter Clothing Drive: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, through Thursday, Oct. 29, Lake County Dental Care, 908 S Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. The dental practice of Dr. Potts and Dr. Gilsdorf is holding a winter wear drive; new or gently used coats, jackets, snowsuits, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, thermal wear, socks and boots for all ages and both genders are needed. Hydrant Flushing: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, Oct. 30, Lake Villa. Fire hydrant flushing will take place in the village of Lake Villa. Residents may experience rusty water and/or lower water pressure during these times. Lake Villa residents should watch for posted signs in their neighborhoods. Food drive and light show: 6-10 p.m. weekdays and 6-11 p.m. weekends, 4968 Prairie Oak Road, Gurnee. A computerized Halloween light show will run, synchronized to music playing on 87.9 FM. A food drive is running at the same time; drop off any non-perishable food items into a box in front of the house.

Artists sought: The Hawthorn District 73 PTO is looking for unique artists to participate in their Winter Boutique, Saturday, Dec. 5. Business/Craft Expo: The Mundelein Park District is looking for exhibitors for its Business and Craft Expo to be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Mundelein Community Center, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein. Exhibit cost is $40, and includes an 8-foot table, tablecloth, business sign, and electricity if needed. Admission to the expo will be free to the public. Tree and bench donations: The Vernon Hills Park District offers residents and neighbors the opportunity to honor a special person or commemorate an event by donating a tree or bench in a district park. Trees range from $225-$475 depending on the species selected, and can be personalized with a bronze plaque, which is sold at cost. Benches may be purchased for donation at a cost of $700, and personalized with a bronze plaque. Prices for plaques start at $70. Pooch Pantry: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Lake County Animal Control, 29278 N. Highway 83, Mundelein. Accepting donations of dry and canned dog and cat food, treats and domestic bird food; gift cards for PetSmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus; cat litter; resealable plastic bags; and pet welfare goods such as bowls and toys. Eli Skinner Chapter, NSDAR: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is seeking volunteers to make wool caps for the troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and South Korea. Wool head covering which can be worn under the Kevlar helmet provides warmth to the head and neck, but does not restrict vision. Patterns are available at www.geocities.com/helmetliner. Electronics recycling: 8 a.m. to noon, the first Saturday of each month, Wauconda Township Highway Department, at 505 W. Bonner Road, Wauconda. All Wauconda Township residents are invited to bring in electronic recyclables. Items accepted include computers and computer components, video games, televisions, VCR/DVD players, cameras, radios and accessories, phones, and more. Allendale Association: A not-for-profit children's facility in Lake Villa, looking for qualified volunteers to work directly with children or on other projects. Help a child develop positive relationships with adults, share gardening knowledge in the vocational horticultural center, evaluate a student's Individual Education Plans and meet with the child's therapeutic team, work in the thrift store, or help in other ways.
