Class 3A Zion-Benton
Site: Shepherd's Crook, Zion
Field: Deerfield, Warren, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Stevenson, Carmel, Waukegan, Zion-Benton.
Outlook: This shapes up as maybe the top regional in the state, as Carmel as Carmel Catholic looks to continue its undefeated season against a field that includes North Suburban Conference champ Lake Forest. Carmel, which shot a 298 to win the East Suburban Catholic Conference meet by 1 stroke over defending state champ St. Viator, boasts Kansas State-bound Jack Watson, Billy White, Jim Spagna, Doug Meyer and David Markiewicz. Watson won the ESCC title by shooting a 2-under 70 at Pine Meadow, while Meyer (73) was third. Lake Forest captured the NSC title by carding a 306. The Scouts are led by Perry Johnson, Mike Skinner and Peter Marshall.
Class 3A McHenry
Site: Oak Grove Golf Course, Harvard
Field: Barrington, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South, Grant, Lake Zurich, McHenry, Mundelein, Round Lake, Woodstock (co-op).
Outlook: Mundelein placed second in the North Suburban Conference meet, shooting a 314 at Midlane. Eric Nelson, Grant Heelan and Sean Forsythe have played strong all season, while Grant Witt played well in the NSC meet. Both Witt and Nelson shot 78. Eric Steagall added a 79 and also has been a consistent performer for the Mustangs.
Lake Zurich's Mike Nutter took second in the NSC meet with a 75.
Barrington lost only once in Mid-Suburban League play (to Prospect) and finished second to the Knights at the MSL tourney. Marc Ackermann, second individually at Poplar Creek, has been solid all year for the Broncos.
Class 2A Grayslake North
Site: Renwood Golf Course, Round Lake Beach
Field: Antioch, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Johnsburg, Lakes, Richmond-Burton, Vernon Hills, Marian Central.
Outlook: Grayslake North is led by Sean Humphrey and fellow veterans Matt Bergstrom and Matt Romac, while Grayslake Central's lineup includes Dylan Granquist, who won the Lake County meet, as well as Colton Brunk, Eric Hogenkamp, Nick Wysocki and Jackson White. Grant's Dillon Peterson and John Schenning earned medals at the North Suburban Conference meet.
