Oct. 2

Shabbat and Sukkot: Celebrate the holidays of Shabbat and Sukkot at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, with a Tot Shabbat Service for preschoolers and their families, followed at 6:50 p.m. by the temple's traditional "Pizza in the Hut" dinner, accompanied by sukkah decorating, singing and waving of the lulav. The cost of dinner is $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 4 to 12 and $18 per household. Cost includes a donation to MAZON: The Jewish Response to Hunger. This is followed by a Shabbat/Sukkot worship service at 8 p.m. RSVP with payment to the temple office. Rummage sale: The annual Community Garage Sale at Community Christian Church will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Bargain hunters will find clothing, sports equipment, books, and toys for kids of all ages. Blessing of the Animals: St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church will have a Blessing of Animals Saturday, Oct. 3, on the church grounds, located on vintage farm property in eastern Antioch. The service will begin at 10 a.m. Owners of all kinds of animals, from pets to farm livestock, are asked to bring their creatures on a leash or in a trailer, cage or container for the service. Pet blessing: St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake, will offer a Pet Blessing at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Animals will receive a blessing from the Rev. Jane Clark. Pets must be in carriers or on leashes.

Oct. 4

Bible study: A series of public Bible studies is planned for Oct. 4-9 at Church of Christ, 1132 Hainesville Road, Round Lake Beach. The free studies are provided each evening by Aaron Kemple, a gospel preacher who works with the Lord's church in Columbus, Ohio. Meetings on Sunday will be at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Weeknight meetings will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The theme for the week is "People in the Life of King David. Anointing of the Sick: St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church has a special Sunday Mass with the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at the church. Anyone who is sick or elderly is invited to receive the sacrament. People who wish to attend the Mass and are not registered parishioners at St. Raphael should call the parish office to RSVP for the Anointing. Temple moving: Big changes are taking place at Congregation Or Shalom as the temple prepares for its official move into its new home, adjacent to its longtime building, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. While religious classes will commence in the new building in September, a community open house for the new building will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 4.

Pulse of Our World: Rabbi Paul Cohen discusses current events, pulled from the headlines, and the appropriate Jewish response at "Pulse of Our World: Our Rabbi Reads the Headlines," taking place at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. This informal, interactive program looks at the news issues of the day from a Jewish perspective.

Animal Blessing: St. Lawrence Episcopal Church, 125 W. Church St., Libertyville, will have an Animal Blessing Day at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. There will be a special liturgy and blessing, a pet treat bake sale, giveaways for the pets and education booths provided by local pet adoption agencies. Church Street will be blocked off for the festivities. There will also be a collection of new or gently used stuffed animals to be donated to needy children. Holy Play: Church Women United of the Barrington area invites all women for a Whole Day of Holy Play from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Techny Towers, Northbrook. www.technytowers.org. Based on the biblical story of Queen Esther, we will explore how we, as women of God, may play, be pampered, love our sisters and serve our God by serving others. Lobster Boil: St. Lawrence Episcopal Church will hold its fourth annual Lobster Boil Saturday, Oct. 10. The 11/4 lb lobsters are shipped directly from New England and arrive fresh that day. Lobsters may be ordered live or steamed and picked up at the church at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7 p.m. Cost is $20 per lobster, payable by check in advance (deadline Oct. 5). Order forms can be downloaded from the Web site www.stlawrencechurch.org or picked up at the church at 125 W. Church St, Libertyville. All proceeds benefit St. Lawrence Church and their outreach ministries.

Clothes for the needy: Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to 16 boys and girls is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Next dates are: Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Donations of gently used children's clothing in good condition are always welcome. Oct. 11

Book fair: Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, will host a Book Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11. The fair will feature a variety of books for all ages, as well as CDs, cassettes and song books. Pickup date will be Sunday, Dec. 6, at the temple. Rabbi's Reading Table: Rabbi Paul Cohen will start off this year's series of Rabbi's Reading Table discussions with the best-selling novel "Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The book revolves around Vel' d' Hiv' (Operation Spring Breeze), the French-led roundup of more than 13,000 Parisian Jews in 1942 and the tragic impact this event has on a 10-year-old Jewish girl. All are welcome to attend.

Oct. 15

Adult classes: The first adult offering of this school year will be Oct. 15 at Congregation Or Shalom, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. The program, "Bagels and Bible," will be led by Rabbi Scott Looper. This is a Thursday morning discussion of Torah, current events and other issues of interest. Programs in this series also will be held Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Sessions are from 10-11:15 a.m. Other adult offerings include Judaism 201 Wednesdays, Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16, from 7 to 8:15 p.m.; Adult Hebrew Classes, which begin Oct. 15 and require registration by Oct. 5; and Torah Study with Rabbi Joe Ozarowski Tuesdays, Oct. 20 and 27, and Nov. 3, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. There is a nominal fee for each of these classes. Stressful time: The United Protestant Church (UPC) of Grayslake will present a workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, called "Regaining Focus in Stressful Times." This workshop will integrate the realities of daily life and the fullness of faith, while helping participants regain focus, deepen their faith, identify their strengths and apply the insights to self, church and community. This workshop will be led by the Rev. William H. Tweedley, a certified life coach who works with spiritual individuals and organizations. Tweedley is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, serving as a hospital chaplain at Advocate Healthcare's Good Samaritan Hospital's Critical Care Unit in Downers Grove. Oct. 18

Revival: Do your soul and spirit need uplifting? The Rev. Phil DelRe from Voice in the Wilderness Ministries will be leading revival and evangelistic services at Lakeland Baptist Church in Lake Villa from Oct. 18-21. DelRe will speak at the 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. services on Sunday, Oct. 18. Services Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 19-21, will begin at 6:30 p.m. The church is at 24551 W. Grand Ave. in Lake Villa. Survivors of Suicide: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago invites those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide to participate in its Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS) program meetings in October: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Holy Family Church Counseling Center, 2515 Palatine Road, Inverness; and 4th Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Carmel High School, One Carmel Parkway, Mundelein. Book discussion: Temple Jeremiah congregant Ruth Adler will lead a discussion of The New York Times best-seller "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant" at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 25, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. This first-person narrative tells the story of Dinah, daughter of Jacob and sister of Joseph, a talented midwife and feminist. All are welcome to attend.

Support for adoptive families: In October, Celebration! Childcare will be starting a Support Group for Adoptive Families. The intent is to lend a little support to community families during the adoption transition and give the opportunity for all to benefit from the use of some hands-on shared experiences to form a support network. Film: Enjoy a thought-provoking evening when Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, airs the controversial film "Forgiving Dr. Mengele" at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1. The movie centers around a shocking act of forgiveness by Auschwitz survivor Eva Mozes Kor and the firestorm of criticism it created. Award-winning filmmaker Bob Hercules will lead a discussion following the movie. Hear the "behind-the-scenes" stories of this award-winning movie.

Judaism on One Foot: Are you interested in learning more about the Jewish religion? Temple Jeremiah's Rabbi Paul Cohen, Rabbi Michelle Greenberg and Education Director Dr. Anne Lidsky are offering an overview and introduction to Jewish origins, rituals and beliefs during a series of programs titled "Judaism on One Foot" at 9 a.m. Mondays, now through Nov. 16, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The classes will include text study, discussion and lecture-style learning and are open to anyone who wants to learn more about Judaism. Hebrew classes: Learn or brush up on your Hebrew skills this year at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The temple offers three levels of Adult Hebrew Sundays, beginning Oct. 4. The classes run concurrently with Religious School. Perfect for the novice, Beginning Prayerbook Hebrew covers the Aleph-Bet through prayer reading and is from 9 to 9:55 a.m. Intermediate Prayerbook Hebrew, offered from 10 to 10:55 a.m., will help you master your prayer book and Torah reading skills and gain a greater understanding of worship services. Conversational Hebrew from 11 to 11:55 a.m. will set you on your way to speaking modern-day Hebrew. Basic Hebrew reading skills are required for both the Intermediate Hebrew and Conversational Hebrew classes. Friday Friends: Friday Friends has been organized within The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein for the purpose of fun and fellowship. The group meets the second Friday of the month, each time at different members' homes. For details, call (847) 949-8670.

Recycling: On the third Sunday of each month, youth will man the recycle bin between services from 9:30 to 10 a.m. and after 11 a.m. Bring your old newspapers, junk mail and catalogs. Youth will be ready to assist with the unloading of your car as you drive up to the bin in the Grace parking lot. The recycle bin is in place on a daily basis. A portion of the cash credits for all paper donations will be used toward a green gift for the community. For seniors: The senior group, The Primetimers, meets at The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein the fourth Monday of the month for refreshments, book studies and guest speakers.
