Sept. 2

Donate outgrown children's clothes, toys and books for a sale to be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the school to benefit the May Whitney PTO.

Sept. 4

Collection for the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry: Now through noon on Friday, Sept. 4, several Wauconda and Island Lake businesses and public buildings are serving as collection sites for food and back-to-school donations to the Wauconda/Island Lake Food Pantry. This is an annual drive sponsored by the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce. Donations can also be made at the Jammin' on Main Street Dance, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, on Main St. in Wauconda. Sept. 5

Blood Drive: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Drive, Buffalo Grove. The village of Buffalo Grove is coordinating a community blood drive; donate blood and get coupons for ice cream from Baskin Robbins or Culvers of Buffalo Grove. Sept. 6

Donate food during parade: 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, along Bernard Drive, Buffalo Grove. The Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce will have a float in the Buffalo Grove Days parade and chamber members will push grocery carts alongside it for the community to help fill with nonperishable food items for the Vernon Township Food Pantry. Open Meetings Act tele-institute: Reservation deadline Tuesday, Sept. 8 for event 2-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept 10, University of Illinois Extension, Lake Country office, 100 S. Highway 45, Grayslake. Clothes for the needy: 9-11 a.m. the second Saturday of each month, St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to size 16 boys and girls is available. Next dates are: Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Sept. 13

Haunted Nature Trail volunteers needed: Planning sessions will be held 1-3 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 13 and 27, Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road, Ingleside. Volo Bog State Natural Area seeks up to 10 volunteers to participate in the site's Haunted Nature Trail to be held from 5-6:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. The ideal candidate is an outgoing and creative theater and performance minded person at least 16 years old. Each volunteer will be asked to develop his or her own personality and costume that is appropriate for entertaining families that may include young children. Hearing Screening: Noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, Grayslake Middle School, 440 Barron Blvd., Grayslake. The Grayslake Lions Club will sponsor a free hearing screening during their annual Steer Roast. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets for the roast are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for ages 5-11 in children in advance; $11 for adults and $10 for seniors at the door. Business/Craft Expo: The Mundelein Park District is looking for exhibitors for its Business and Craft Expo to be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Mundelein Community Center, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein. Exhibit cost is $40, and includes an 8-foot table, tablecloth, business sign, and electricity if needed. Admission to the expo will be free to the public. Volunteers Gardeners sought: Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road, Ingleside. Volo Bog's Volunteer Gardeners are adults who devote 1-3 hours per week to pulling weeds, watering, transplanting seedlings and collecting and scattering seeds. The season runs from mid spring, when the volunteers gather for cleanup burns, through late fall of each year. Tree and bench donations: The Vernon Hills Park District offers residents and neighbors the opportunity to honor a special person or commemorate an event by donating a tree or bench in a district park. Trees range from $225-$475 depending on the species selected, and can be personalized with a bronze plaque, which is sold at cost. Benches may be purchased for donation at a cost of $700, and personalized with a bronze plaque. Prices for plaques start at $70. Pooch Pantry: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Lake County Animal Control, 29278 N. Highway 83, Mundelein. Accepting donations of dry and canned dog and cat food, treats and domestic bird food; gift cards for PetSmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus; cat litter; resealable plastic bags; and pet welfare goods such as bowls and toys. Eli Skinner Chapter, NSDAR: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is seeking volunteers to make wool caps for the troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and South Korea. Electronics recycling: 8 a.m. to noon, the first Saturday of each month, Wauconda Township Highway Department, at 505 W. Bonner Road, Wauconda. Allendale Association: A not-for-profit children's facility in Lake Villa, looking for qualified volunteers to work directly with children or on other projects. Help a child develop positive relationships with adults, share gardening knowledge in the vocational horticultural center, evaluate a student's Individual Education Plans and meet with the child's therapeutic team, work in the thrift store, or help in other ways.
