Aug. 7

A Summer Night Out: A Summer Night Out will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14 at Faith Lutheran Church, Route 59 and Grass Lake Road, Antioch. Parents can enjoy an evening out while children ages 3 through fourth-graders participate in crafts, music, snacks, Bible lessons and activities. This year's theme, "A Ticket to Adventure," takes the children to some of the key cities St. Paul visited on his missionary journey. Aug. 8

Clothes for the needy: Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to 16 boys and girls is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Next dates are: Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Donations of gently used children's clothing in good condition are always welcome. Aug. 10

Vacation Bible school: New Life Lutheran Church will host vacation Bible school - with an ocean theme - Monday through Friday, Aug. 10-14, from 9-11:30 a.m. Register by calling (847) 438-5018 or visiting www.newlife-wels.org. There is no cost or obligation. This year VBS is offered to children who are going into 4-year-old preschool through eighth grade. New Life is at 910 S. Old Rand Road in Lake Zurich, just two blocks north of Highway 12.

Aug. 13

Rummage sale: St. Ignatius of Antioch, Depot and Deep Lake, will have its "Whale of a Sale" annual rummage sale from 6-8 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 13; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. This year's sale includes more than 8,000 square feet of items, including furniture, antiques, building supplies, tools, toys, kids and adult clothing. For details, contact the Rev. Aug. 14

Vacation Bible school: Federated Church, 200 S. Barrington Road, Wauconda, will offer vacation Bible school Friday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15. Registration begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14. Fun and adventure begins at 6:30 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, participants will visit Rome and meet the Apostle Paul, create crafts, experience real-life dramas, play games, sample snacks and listen to music. Gift of Hope: "Community Connection," an informational program for residents in Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties, will hold its next meeting Friday, Aug. 14, at the "Chapel on the Lake," 12 N. Pistakee Lake Road in Fox Lake. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. with coffee and pastries, followed by the program at 9:30 a.m. The program for August is "Gift of Hope - Organ & Tissue Donor Network." Gift of Hope is the federally designated nonprofit agency coordinating organ and tissue donation and supports families of donors in the northern three-quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana. There is no charge for the program. Reservations are appreciated but not required. The "Chapel on the Lake" is at 12 N. Pig roast: St. Matthew Lutheran Church on Old McHenry Road, between Quentin and Midlothian Roads, Hawthorn Woods, will sponsor its 19th annual pig roast from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16. Blessing of backpacks: Students in preschool and older can bring their backpacks or lunchboxes to the 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday, Aug. 23, at Grace Lutheran Church, 501 Valley Park Drive, Libertyville. There will be a special time during the service to celebrate and bless the beginning of another school year. Teachers, aides, principals, administrators, secretaries, librarians, janitors and bus drivers are invited to attend. Children can also bring a school supply item to be donated to Lutheran World Relief. The church is putting together school kits for kids in need. Rummage sale: Community Protestant Church, United Church of Christ in Mundelein, is accepting items for the Friday, Aug. 28, and Saturday, Aug. 29, rummage sale. The church accepts clothing, household items, furniture, tools, books, art work and kids items. Rummage sale donations can be dropped off at Community Protestant Church, 418 N. Women's Bible study: St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 24500 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, will offer a Women's Fall Bible Study on the book "The Faith" by Charles Colson. The 12-session series will be led by instructor Georgeanna Guritz, member of The Village Church of Barrington. Classes will run from 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 9-Nov. 25, in St. Matthew's Conference Room. "The Faith" will be available for purchase the first night of class. Child care will be provided. Special speaker: New York Times best-selling author Matthew Kelly will speak live at St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Mundelein at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the St. Mary church sanctuary, 22333 W. Erhart Road, Mundelein. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for check-in and seating. Kelly will begin speaking promptly at 7:30 p.m. The evening will conclude with a book signing and fellowship. Rummage sale: The annual Community Garage Sale at Community Christian Church will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Bargain hunters will find clothing, sports equipment, books, and toys for kids of all ages. Special treasures will include antiques, collectibles, designer clothes, glassware, jewelry, pictures, silver, and furniture. Donations for the sale will be accepted at the church Sept. 28 to Oct. 1. Services in Spanish: Church of the Holy Family/Sagrada Familia (Episcopal) in Lake Villa offers services in Spanish at 5 p.m. Sundays. Thrift Shop is open 9-noon Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. $2 bag sale last Saturday each month. Donations are welcome.

Friday Friends: Friday Friends has been organized within The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein for the purpose of fun and fellowship. The group meets the second Friday of the month, each time at different members' homes. For details, call (847) 949-8670.

Recycling: On the third Sunday of each month, youth will man the recycle bin between services from 9:30 to 10 a.m. and after 11 a.m. Bring your old newspapers, junk mail and catalogs. Youth will be ready to assist with the unloading of your car as you drive up to the bin in the Grace parking lot. The recycle bin is in place on a daily basis. A portion of the cash credits for all paper donations will be used toward a green gift for the community. For seniors: The senior group, The Primetimers, meets at The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein the fourth Monday of the month for refreshments, book studies and guest speakers.
