Grant holds off Zion-Benton
Nick Guenther provided offense for Grant's baseball team and helped stymie Zion-Benton's in the end.
In a North Suburban Conference crossover Friday, Grant scored 7 runs in the first three innings, then stopped Zion-Benton's comeback bid to pull out an 8-7 win.
Guenther pitched out of trouble in the seventh to earn the save, after leading the offense by going 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
Jimi Cokefair also had a big day at the plate for Grant (11-8-1), going 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI. David Dickinson picked up the win, throwing 4 innings in relief. He did not allow an earned run.
Stevenson 9, Wauconda 1: Matt Geissler went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for the host Patriots in the North Suburban crossover.
Pat Wilson also was 2-for-3 for Stevenson (20-5). Alex Goldman, Erick King and Corey Lasky also had doubles for the Patriots, while Greg Kingery (2-0) worked 6 innings for the win. Kingery allowed just 4 hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Lake Zurich 5, Evanston 3: The Bears used three pitchers - Rick Erickson, Tanner Witt and Parker Asmann - to win the nonconference game.
Austin Cox led Lake Zurich (17-8-1) at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Coach Gary Simon lauded the defense of shortstop Witt and center fielder Mike Miller.
Mundelein 11, Antioch 1: Tyler Adams went 3-for-3 with a double, as the Mustangs improved to 20-5.
Jay Mueller and Dillon Smith also had doubles, while Matt Risdon added a triple. Dante Martinez pitched 5 innings for the win.
