Carmel hangs on vs. ND
Carmel survived a furious rally by Notre Dame, which scored 4 runs in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded looking for more when reliever Nick Battallini closed the door in the Corsairs 13-12 victory in East Suburban Catholic Conference play on Monday.
The Corsairs, who improve to 17-6, got a grand slam home run from Paul Poirier and 3 hits, including a double, from Kevin Hendricks.
Mike Pudlo, Poirier and Derek Jordan each had 2 hits. Jordan's hits were a double and a triple.
Pitcher Mike Bergstrom got the win for the Corsairs.
Mundelein 10, Zion-Benton 0: Mundelein pounded out 11 hits en routed to the shutout victory.
Jay Mueller and Anthony Cancelli each blasted a home run while Jack Cunnion and Matt Risdon added doubles for the Mustangs, who improve to 18-4.
Pitcher Dante Martinez got the victory to improve to 5-2. He pitched all 5 innings and struck out three.
Lake Forest 4, Stevenson 2: Pitcher Kyle Ruchim suffered his first loss of the season (3-1) as Lake Forest tagged Stevenson with the loss.
Ruchim struck out 3 but gave up 6 hits to the Scouts.
Stevenson, which didn't get on the board until the seventh inning, drops to 17-5 on the season.
Vernon Hills 11, Round Lake 4: It was a balanced attack for Vernon Hills, which saw all 9 starters hit safely and seven different players drive in runs.
Nate Moraton led the way with a 2-for-3 effort that include a double. He also drove in 4 runs.
Chris Argianos and Zack Freibrun added 2 hits while Nick Mazza drilled a triple and PJ Marsek and Chris Marras each came up with a double.
Pitcher Scott Kempel got the win for the Cougars. He went four innings and struck out 3 batters while allowing just 2 hits.
Grant 18, Kenosha St. Joseph 8: A 9-run sixth inning turned Grant's skimpy 1-run lead into a comfy 10-run cushion.
David Dickinson led the offensive explosion by going 2-for-2, including a 3-run homer run. He also drove in 4 runs.
Thomas Gier hit a home run of his own and finished 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI. Nick Guenther drove in 4 runs for the Bulldogs (10-7-1). He went 2-for-3 with a double.
Pitcher Travis Stefanowski picked up the win in relief.
Lakes 8, Wauconda 7: Down 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Eagles staged a huge rally and came away with the North Suburban Prairie Division victory.
The Eagles scored 4 runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Seniors Eric Lopez, Kevin Kelly and Dominick Costa all had big hits during the rally. Kelly and Costa each tripled, one tied the game and the other gave Lakes the lead.
Wauconda loaded the bases in the seventh but two strikeouts by Lakes pitcher Tim Ryan ended the game.
Prairie Ridge 12, Grayslake North 1: The Knights dropped to 5-15 on the season with the loss.
