Flower sale: Order your bedding plants and help raise money for the Dunstan family through a sale at Annunciation of Our Lady Episcopal Church, 5725 Stearns School Road, Gurnee. The Dustans have been living at Ronald McDonald House in Milwaukee for more than eight months because the children are in and out of the hospital. Ian was diagnosed with multiple gastrointestinal issues shortly after his birth. His current diagnoses are: GERD, dysphagia, gastroparesis, asthma, and visceral hyperalgesia. His brother, Evan, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia last July and is recovering after receiving a bone marrow transplant in December. Immaculate Heart: Society of Mary, the local ward of the Immaculate Heart, meets at 9 a.m. the first Saturday of the month at Holy Cross Chapel, 500 Park Ave, and Route 83, Unit 102, Lake Villa. The day begins with the recitation of the rosary, followed by Mass, a continental breakfast and a period of study and discussion. societyofmary-ne-il.org.

Clergy connection: K. K. Hamsher Funeral Home, the "Chapel on the Lake," will hold its next "Clergy Connection" beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 5. The topic is "The Five Wishes - Advance Directives & What You Need to Know." The guest speaker is Chaplain Dan Simmet of Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville who will discuss advance directives, the durable power of attorney, and the health care proxy. "Clergy Connection" is a monthly program and open to all clergy, support staff, and parish lay leaders in the communities of Lake, McHenry, and the northern Cook counties. There is no cost for the program. A complimentary continental breakfast will be served beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the program following at 9 a.m. Reservations would be appreciated. K. K. Taizé service: A Taizé Candlelight Prayer Service will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville as an observance of National Day of Prayer. Taizé Worship is an ecumenical participatory prayer service designed to achieve a contemplative state through music, song and silence. Midway through the service, there will be the opportunity to place lighted candles in sand-filled containers in this procession of light reminding us that Christ's love is the light of the world that never dies. Prayer breakfast: Former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan and his wife, Marie, will speak at the Lake County National Day of Prayer Breakfast. The Ryans will share how their family survived loss and how that loss deepened their faith. Their testimony will be given at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Country Squire Restaurant in Grayslake, at Lake County's National Day of Prayer Breakfast. Joining the speakers will be community members representing government, church, families, media and education. Noah's flood: Holy Cross Lutheran Church will present "Noye's Fludde" (Noah's Flood) by Benjamin Britten (who wrote this as a children's opera). The four performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8 and at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9. First performed live in 1958, the opera was written to be performed in a church with the audience, or "congregation" to join in singing some of the hymns. A full orchestra includes members from Holy Cross, invited instrumentalists, the bell choir from Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Lincolnshire, and a full percussion section. Donations of $10 for adults and $5 for youth 10 and younger will benefit the ELCA Domestic Flood Victims and is supported by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Prayer walk: Several churches in Lake Zurich will be hosting the second annual Lake Zurich Community Prayer Walk in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7. All Lake Zurich-area residents of all ages, regardless of church affiliation, are invited to join in a walk around the lake while praying for the community, schools, leaders, and residents. Printed prayer guides and bottled water will be distributed at Paulus Park at 6 p.m. We will gather at the halfway point, Breezewald Park, for a time of worship and prayer before continuing back to Paulus Park. Steak fundraiser: Christ Lutheran Church in Vernon Hills will host a Wild West Steak Dinner and Silent Auction from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the church, 595 Deerpath Drive, Vernon Hills. Clothes for the needy: Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to size 16 boys and girls is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Next dates are: May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Concert: The Elaine N. Sherman Fine Arts Fund presents "Hebrew Melody" at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe. Survivors of Suicide: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago welcomes those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide to participate in its Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide program meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Carmel High School, One Carmel Parkway, Mundelein. Friday Friends: Friday Friends has been organized within The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein for the purpose of fun and fellowship. The group meets the second Friday of the month, each time at different members' homes. For details, call (847) 949-8670.

Recycling: On the third Sunday of each month, youth will man the recycle bin between services, from 9:30 to 10 a.m., and after the second service, after 11 a.m. Bring your old newspapers, junk mail and catalogs. Youth will be ready to assist with the unloading of your car as you drive up to the bin in the Grace parking lot. The recycle bin is in place on a daily basis, so come any time that is convenient for you. A portion of the cash credits for all paper donations will be used toward a green gift for the community. Grief support group: Faith Lutheran Church announces the formation of a GriefShare Support Group, which provides support for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. For seniors: The senior group, The Primetimers, meets at The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein the fourth Monday of the month for refreshments, book studies and guest speakers.
