Tryouts and clinics for community sports groups, plus sporting events and tournaments, skate competitions, public appearances by sports stars in the area, autograph signings, sports conventions, etc. Deadline is two weeks before event date.

Turkey Shoot: Registration deadline Friday, Nov. 14; event 9 a.m. for grades 1-2, 9:30 a.m. for grades 3-4, 10 a.m. for grades 5-6, 10:30 a.m. for grades 7-8 Saturday, Nov. 15, Lindenhurst Park District, 2200 E. Grass Lake Road, Lindenhurst. Teams of one parent and one child grouped by grade level will shoot 10 free throws. Winners in each grade level will receive a gift certificate for a turkey. Sky High Volleyball: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, Libertyville Sports Complex, 1950 N. U.S. Highway 45, Libertyville. Girls volleyball tryouts for ages 17 and 18. Visit skyhighvolleyball.org.

Waukegan Turkey Trot: Registration starts at 9 a.m., races start at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, Belvidere Park, Waukegan. Donate two cans of food to register. Races will be held for age groups ranging from 7-12 months up to 60 and over, from 5 yards to 1 mile depending on age group. Nov. 16

Starlights Skating Exhibition: 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, Twin Rinks Ice Pavilion, 1500 Abbot Court, Buffalo Grove. The 2008-09 Starlights Synchronized Skating Teams' season debut. Nov. 27

Annual Turkey Trot: Thursday, Nov. 27, Harper College, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine, in front of Building A, Palatine. Pre-race $23 residents; $28 nonresidents. Race day, $40. Race times: 8 a.m.-two-mile run; 9 a.m. five-mile run. There will also be a 100 yard drumstick dash fun run for ages 10 and younger at 10 a.m., cost $5. Dec. 8

Men's Winter Basketball Leagues: Register by Monday, Dec. 8; organizational meeting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, Grayslake Park District Rec Center, 240 Commerce Drive, Grayslake; game times vary from 2-8 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 11 to April 5, at Grayslake Central High School, 400 N. Lake St., Grayslake, and Grayslake Middle School, 440 Barron Blvd., Grayslake. For ages 18 and up. Teams will play a minimum 10-game season with a season ending tournament. Wolves player visit: 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, Indian Trails Public Library District, 355 S. Schoenbeck Road, Wheeling. A Chicago Wolves Hockey player will share his experience on the ice and discuss the importance of reading. One audience member will get to put on a Chicago Wolves jersey.
