Oct. 17

Lake County Astronomical Society: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, Volo Bog State Natural Area visitor center, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road, Ingleside. Monthly meeting begins with an open business meeting, followed by a free public astronomy program at about 8:30 p.m., then a public star party in the parking lot starting at 9:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Shoreline Dance Club: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest. Couples can review basic salsa steps and learn new ones. Lessons are followed by an evening of social dancing. Admission per couple is $20 for members and $25 for guests. Membership per couple is $20 per year. Watercolor Workshop, Glorious Autumn: Noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, Brushwood at Ryerson Woods, located near Deerfield on Riverwoods road between Half Day Road and Deerfield Road. The instructor will provide demonstrations on watercolor techniques, composition and selecting scenery to paint and draw. A supply list will be provided. Hot Dog Eating Contest: 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, Choppers Bar and Grill, 26375 W. Route 173, Antioch. Contest entry is $20. With prizes for contestants and food and drink specials for spectators. Lake County Art League: 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20 at State Bank of the Lakes community room on Commerce and Center streets in Grayslake. Local artist and retired College of Lake County instructor Daniel Ziembo will provide a study on the art of sketching visual notes. See how these sketches can be developed further in the studio and incorporated into more finished works.

Nov. 6

Lake County Astronomical Society: 6:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 6 at Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. Utilizing powerful telescopes, amateur astronomers from the group will share views of the moon and perhaps Jupiter from outside the library. These telescopes can magnify the view of the moon and planets as much as 200 times normal size. In recognition of the election season, children who attend will be voting to name the club's newest telescope. This event is free and open to all ages. Lincolnshire Garden Club: 9:30 a.m. Nov. 20 at Hawthorn Gardens Nursery, 24481 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods. Hawthorn Gardens personnel will demonstrate the creation of winter containers using spruce tops. The garden club welcomes all interested, no matter what level of expertise. Lake County Art League: The fall members show is on display through Nov. 17 at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Bowen Park, 1800 N Sheridan Road, Waukegan. The show presents 44 pieces of fine art created by local artists and includes acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings; pastel, encaustic and scratchboard art plus photographs and mixed media work. Many of the pieces are sold by the individual artists. Visit the center from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
