Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago invites those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide to participate in its Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide Program (LOSS), meeting Sundays from 7-9 p.m. Oct 12, Nov. 9 and Dec 14 at Holy Family Church Counseling Center, 2515 Palatine Road, Inverness; and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. Oct 23, Nov 13 and Dec 18 at Carmel High School, 1 Carmel Parkway, Mundelein.

Church of the Holy Apostles in Wauconda: A Fifth Friday Ecumenical Taizé Service of "Silence and Light" will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. The Silence and Light service is a relatively short prayer service consisting of periods of silence interspersed with chants, brief readings and short verbal prayers. The event is for those familiar with this style of worship, curious or simply a weary soul looking for a brief respite from worldly clamor and clatter. The church is located at 26238 N. Congregation Or Shalom: An adult class called "Everything You Wanted to Know About Judaism but Were Afraid to Ask" is being offered on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at Congregation Or Shalom, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. The classes include "The Jewish Dictionary of Ritual Items," Wednesday, Oct. 22, and "Debunking the Hanukkah Myth" Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Among the other events being planned is an opportunity to "Read the novels and meet the author" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, as Maggie Anton, award-winning author of acclaimed novels, "Raschi's Daughters" and "Raschi's Daughter - Secret Scholar." Anton will share her journey in writing these well-researched tales of 11th century France, where Jewish scholarship, sensuality and feminism meet. Anton will be available to sign books following her presentation.

Child care with a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and senior financial consultant, Richard Drews from Libertyville is providing "Back to Work," a program where a parent can receive child care at no cost while they go on a job interview and "We Care," a program where a parents can receive child care at no cost while meeting their special medical treatment needs. Celebration! Child care will provide a maximum of five, three-hour child care sessions so parents may go on a job interview or to meet medical needs. Parents need to enroll their child. St Joseph: Men are invited to join a pilgrimage to Italy. Eight places are open for a pilgrimage to Italy Feb. 2-11, 2009. The cost of the pilgrimage is $3,108 per person based on double occupancy and includes travel in Rome, Assisi, Siena and Florence. This package includes nine nights of accommodations, round-trip airfare, daily Mass, breakfast and seven dinners, all entrance fees to the sights and shrines, plus all taxes, surcharges and transfers. St. Mary of the Annunciation at Fremont Center: The church in Mundelein will host a presentation "Forming a Conscience for Faithful Citizenship" from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28. Crossview Church: Wildfire, the high school youth group of Crossview Church in Antioch will sponsor a family-friendly Indoor Maze from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Oct. 29-Nov. 1, in the church gym at 750 Highview Drive. This is an alternative Halloween activity. More than 3,200 square feet of tunnels, trap doors, slides, platforms, backlights, and surprises await all who dare to enter. From 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1, the lights will be left on for families with young children. Faith Lutheran Church: The Community Concert Series "Sounds of Faith" continues in October with an organ recital. Mark Davidson and the Rev. Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation: Join the congregation for worship services at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, for the sermon topic "The Word of the Day is Choice." Being human, we are not bound by instinct like the creatures of the earth but rather we have been given the gift and the burden of choice. The message will look at the choices we make, both large and small, and how each choice we make moves us closer to who and what we would like to be.

• The sermon's topic is "Haunted and Holy: The Spiritual Power of Ghost Stories" for 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. In this Halloween-themed service, we will explore the place of the ghost in Western culture and in American society, particularly with an eye on how "spirits" factor into concepts of spirituality.

St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church: The church in Antioch will celebrate a Latin Mass at the regularly scheduled 6 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Mass will be said according to the Novus Ordo. The Sunday Vigil Mass is celebrated in Latin, with the exception of the readings and homily, which will be spoken in English.
