Congregation Or Shalom: An adult class called "Everything You Wanted to Know About Judaism but Were Afraid to Ask" is being offered on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at Congregation Or Shalom, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. The classes include "The Jewish Dictionary of Ritual Items," Wednesday, Oct. 22, and "Debunking the Hanukkah Myth" Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Among the other events being planned is an opportunity to "Read the novels and meet the author" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, as Maggie Anton, award-winning author of acclaimed novels, "Raschi's Daughters" and "Raschi's Daughter - Secret Scholar." Anton will share her journey in writing these well-researched tales of 11th century France, where Jewish scholarship, sensuality and feminism meet. Anton will be available to sign books following her presentation.

Child care with a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and senior financial consultant, Richard Drews from Libertyville is providing "Back to Work," a program where a parent can receive child care at no cost while they go on a job interview and "We Care," a program where a parents can receive child care at no cost while meeting their special medical treatment needs. Celebration! Child care will provide a maximum of five, three-hour child care sessions so parents may go on a job interview or to meet medical needs. Parents need to pre-enroll their child. Linda McGinn Waterman, director of women's ministries for Harvest Bible Chapel Lake Zurich, has recently released the books "Resource Guide for Women's Ministry," "Investing Your Life in Things That Matter" as well as "Called to Influence," a women's curriculum for growth in spiritual maturity.
Author of more than 20 books, McGinn has served as training coordinator for the Billy Graham Training Center at the Cove; director of electronic media for the International Missions Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Richmond, Va.; director of communications in an at-will position for Gov. Jim Gilmore of Va.; and Southeast regional representative for the Women's Advisory Sub-Committee of another denomination.
Recipient of the National Religious Broadcaster's Genesis Award for her nationally syndicated radio program, KeyPoints: Practical Christianity for Life in the Real World, created in partnership with Steve Brown and his Orlando, Fla.-based radio program Key Life, McGinn has a bachelor's degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from Gordon College, Wenham, Mass., and master's degree in communications from the Washington, D.C. branch of Regent University.
Her book, "Dancing in the Storm: Hope in the Midst of Chaos" was also nominated for the Library of Virginia 2000 Non-Fiction Award, by the Virginia Center for the Book. Her books are available in bookstores.
St. Lawrence Episcopal Church: The church will hold its third annual Lobster Boil Saturday, Oct. 4. The 1 1/4 lb. lobsters are shipped directly from New England and arrive fresh Saturday morning. You may order your lobsters either live or steamed. Lobsters may be picked up at St. Lawrence at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7 p.m. Lobsters must be pre-ordered by Monday, Sept. 29, and the cost is $20 per steamed lobster, $16 per live lobster, by check (in advance) payable to St. Lawrence Episcopal Church.

Grayslake United Protestant Church: The annual Spaghetti Dinner at Grayslake UPC is set for Saturday, Sept. 27. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the candlelit fellowship hall of the church, located at 54 S. Whitney St. in downtown Grayslake.
For just $20, a whole family can enjoy a delicious homemade meal that includes spaghetti with a secret-recipe sauce, coleslaw, garlic bread, drinks and desserts. A meatless marinara spaghetti sauce is also available. Single prices for adult meals are $6, seniors are $5, children ages 5-12 are $4 and kids age 4 and under eat free.
The delicious spaghetti sauce will also be available for sale. The dinner is organized by one of the church's fellowship groups, the Friday Knights, who have been making their famous spaghetti for more than 40 years, according to member Barb Fischel.
