Fireworks in Pingree Grove

Pingree Grove today will have its first fireworks show. The 25-minute show begins at dusk and will be held outside the Cambridge Lakes Community Center, just off Wester Boulevard.

Pingree tunes up Sundays

Pingree Grove is all about live music every Sunday through July 27 at Centennial Park on Reinking Road. Performances begin at 6 p.m.

Village needs panel volunteers

The Carpentersville Improvement Committee is seeking applications from residents interested in serving on the village's newest committee. Members assist the Community Development Department with activities that promote residential and commercial property care and maintenance. The committee generally meets one night per month. Apply to youth committee

Hanover Township is seeking both adult and high school-age residents to serve on its Committee on Youth, which is charged with advising the township board on programs to combat and prevent juvenile delinquency and meet the needs of local youth. Residents must live in the township. Applications, due by 4 p.m. July 18, are available at the township clerk's office, 250 S. Route 59, Bartlett. Records to be destroyed

Kaneland School District 302 will destroy temporary special-education records for students who were enrolled for the 2002-03 school year and earlier. Anyone who believes the records are still useful is encouraged to call the special education services office at (630) 365-5111, ext. 110, before Aug. 11. Records include psychological and case study evaluations, annual reviews and copies of individualized education programs.

Ladies golf tournament

The 2008 St. Charles Ladies Golf Tournament is planned for July 10-12 at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave. The competition, sponsored by Avenue Two Barber Shop, includes both 9- and 18-hole divisions. It's open to women ages 18 and older who have a St. Charles mailing address, live in the St. Charles Park District or have a season park pass. The deadline to register is 8 p.m. Sunday. Publicity workshop

A media relations workshop for St. Charles businesses is planned for 8 a.m. Tuesday at Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St. "Give the Media News They Can Use: 7 Tips To Getting Good Publicity" is being presented by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership as part of the organization's business development breakfast series. Guest speakers include Jane Cooper and Tim Montgomery of Cooper Hong Inc., a local public relations and marketing firm. Admission to the one-hour workshop is free for partnership members and $20 for visitors. To register, call (630) 513-5386.

Low-cost spay clinic

National Animal Welfare Society of the U.S. will transport dogs and cats from the Aurora Animal Control and Care Facility, 600 S. River St., to its Mokena clinic for two low-cost spay/neuter/vaccination programs this summer. The clinics are set for Wednesday and Aug. 13. The fee is $50 to spay or neuter a dog and $25 for a cat. Heartworm testing and vaccinations for rabies, distemper and kennel cough are $10 each. Reservations are required. Pick up a form at the Aurora Animal Control facility or call the Mokena clinic at (708) 478-5102. Pets must be at the Animal Control facility by 6:30 a.m. the day of transport and will be brought back between 5 and 5:30 p.m. the same day.

Songwriting contest

The "Art in Your Ear" songwriting contest is open for entries. The contest, held in conjunction with Batavia's Art in Your Eye festival, has categories for pop/rock, country, folk/protest, hip hop/rap and Christian/inspirational songs. Winners will get prizes and a chance to perform at the festival. Applications are $20 and available online at www.artinyourear.com. They need to be postmarked by July 15. Entries are judged solely on songwriting.
