Batavia holds off Kaneland
Batavia's girls volleyball team held off Kaneland 29-27, 25-16 Thursday night in Maple Park.
The first game started out tight as the Knights' attack gave the Bulldogs problems. But Batavia hung tough.
"It was a little ugly early on," said Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne. "But in the second game, our offense stated putting it together."
Indeed, Batavia jumped ahead early in Game 2 and though Kaneland scored some late points, it never mounted a serious threat.
Batavia (5-5, 3-1) was led by Kristin Hoffman's 17 assists, 5 digs and 4 aces. Melissa Norville added 6 digs, 2 blocks and 4 kills.
For the Knights (2-8, 1-3), Jessica Lubic had 11 assists, 4 kills and 3 digs. Brittany Nelson finished with 5 kills and 4 blocks.

Benet d. Marian Catholic:ŒThe Redwings (9-0, 2-0) rolled to a 25-18, 25-14 East Suburban Catholic Conference triumph behind Natalie Patzin's 8 kills, Ariana Mankus' 6 kills and Jessica Jendryk 5 kills and 5 blocks.
Glenbard East d. West Aurora:ŒAmanda Peterson reeled off 19 kills to lift the Rams (4-1, 3-1) to a 27-25, 22-25, 25-17 win in the DuPage Valley. Alyssa Gianatasio added 7 kills and 13 digs.
Neuqua Valley d. Elgin:ŒThe Wildcats (4-2, 2-1) used Brittany Mikottis' 5 kills and Shannon McGowan's 10 digs to win 25-7, 25-15 in the Upstate Eight Conference.
Wheaton Academy d. Walther Lutheran:ŒMaggie Johnson's 15 kills and Carly Keith's 25 assists propelled the Warriors (6-3, 2-0) to a 25-12, 19-25, 25-21 Private School League triumph.
Wheaton North d. Glenbard North:ŒThe Falcons (5-4, 2-2) climbed above .500 with a 25-19, 25-13 win in the DuPage Valley Conference aided by Liz Lee's 11 kills and Jesse Smith's 18 assists.
Lisle d. Sandwich:ŒLiz Todd delivered 8 kills and 2 blocks and Alison Petkovsek chipped in 5 kills for the Lions (5-7, 3-1), who posted a 25-21, 25-18 Interstate Eight North sweep.
Schaumburg d. Addison Trail:ŒKristina Ciaglia had 5 kills in the 25-17, 25-17 loss for the Blazers (6-11) in nonconference action.
St. Charles North d. Bartlett 25-19, 25-16: The North Stars (8-3) remained undefeated in three conference matches with their win in Bartlett. Elin Smith finished with 7 assists, 3 kills, 3 aces and 3 digs. Rachel Huber added 7 kills and Annie Stoermer set 12 assists.
Boys soccer
Marmion 4, Downers Grove North 1: The Cadets (5-4-1) won another game in the Pepsi Showdown on the strength of three second-half goals. Ralph Palmeri scored twice and Armando Hermosillo and Pablo Del Toro added one each. Ryan Hunt made 4 saves in goal for Marmion.
Wheaton Academy 6, Oswego 0: Lucas Young and Andrew Knighten both scored twice for the Warriors (4-1-2) in the Pepsi Showdown. They play St. Charles North in the next round Saturday.
Lisle 1, Herscher 0:ŒFreshman Grant Fitzgerald scored in the first half off a Viktor Vajda pass to lead the Lions (8-1, 6-0) to the road win in the Interstate Eight Conference. Jay Osika made 11 saves in goal for the shutout.
St. Francis 4, Joliet Catholic 4:ŒBrian McMahon scored 3 goals for the Spartans (2-4-3) in a nonconference match.
York 2, Glenbard South 1:ŒYork got goals from Ryan Roberts and Adam Ahern in the nonconference match.
Lake Park 0, St. Charles East 0:ŒIn the Upstate Eight Conference, Matt Durbin and Dave Mack combined on the shutout in goal for the Lancers (5-1-3, 0-1-1) with 7 saves.
Boys golf
West Aurora 144, WW South 154:ŒFive days after setting a new school record for an 18-hole tournament, West Aurora established a new benchmark for a nine-hole dual-meet score.
Jeff Etter and Chad Becker fired a combined 69 with under-par rounds of 34 and 35, respectively, while Kurtis Luedtke and Kyle McCradic were at 37 and 38.
With its even-par 144-154 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South Thursday at Orchard Valley, the Blackhawks eclipsed the previous record of 148 set in 2003.
"They now have the 18-hole record and the nine-hole record," said West Aurora coach Jay Bauer. "It's all relative, but this is clearly the best team I've had in my 15 years."
