Judson to host 10th annual Literacy in Motion Conference June 19-22
Judson University will host the 10th annual Literacy in Motion Conference on Tuesday-Friday, June 19-22, at the Creekside South Education Building, 1151 N. State St. in Elgin.
This annual conference welcomes educators from all over the world to learn from speakers about instructional methods for elevating literacy in kindergarten to 12th grade classrooms.
Educators who attend the four-day conference can earn 18 PD hours or enroll for graduate credit.
Drs. Steven Layne and Joy Towner and the graduate faculty in Literacy Education direct the conference each year with assistance from students enrolled in the Master of Education in Literacy program.
This spring, Dr. Layne will open the 10th annual conference with a breakfast keynote address entitled, "If You Only Knew" where he will focus on his work as a writer of award-winning texts from multiple genres.
In their Tuesday morning workshop for kindergarten to third grade educators, Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris will explore techniques to get students "unstuck" by shifting the language of reading instruction, adjusting conventional prompts, and reframing scaffolding.
Burkins and Yaris will also lead an afternoon workshop that discusses guided reading instruction.
For the fourth- to 12th-grade teachers, Kelly Gallagher will lead a two-part workshop on Tuesday titled, "Teaching Practices that Position Students Closer to Reading and Writing Excellence," that will discuss critical decisions that underpin artful teaching.
Award-winning illustrator E.B. Lewis will deliver a keynote address on Wednesday morning and explore ways to help children find their passion.
In her Wednesday afternoon keynote address, Laurie Halse Anderson will discuss ways teachers and students can bond through literature and storytelling. Karen Biggs-Tucker and Megan Truax will lead the popular book talking sessions and highlight new titles for readers. Thursday's program will begin with an interactive session by Nancy Steineke, called "Questioning Nonfiction: Teaching Students How to Read, Evaluate and Write About Nonfiction."
On Friday, Kristin Ziemke will explore the use of devices for classroom learning.
Registration for this conference is $330, with limited availability. Registration closes Wednesday, June 13. Individuals interested in registering after that time should call (847) 628-1105 to confirm space availability prior to registering.
No on-site registrations will be possible for this event.
