Side Street Studio Arts presents 'Lucid Recollections'

Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court in Elgin, will host "Lucid Recollections," an exhibit of artwork created and curated by artist-interns Shaina Hope Read, Morgan Markowski, Mark Rodriguez, and Daniel Tompkins.

The exhibit is a temporary art installation featuring a combination of sculpture, photography, printmaking, and painting. "Lucid Recollections" opens Wednesday, Aug. 24, with a gallery reception Saturday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public and sponsored in part by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.

The artist-intern program launched during the summer of 2013 and has since seen 11 young artists participate in the program. The professional practice program is designed to help young artists as they find and explore different entrepreneurship and artistic methods. At the culmination of the experience, with guidance from directors and staff, an exhibition or production is created from an ongoing archive of each artist's work. Artists explore best practices for managing, editing, and install work, and become an integral part of the support staff of Side Street Studio Arts.

"This summer's group of artist-interns has been endlessly inspiring and an absolute pleasure to work with," said director and former Artist-Intern Roberto Martinez. "This culminating exhibition is an excellent reflection of the talents of these four artists and the dedication each of them has to their craft."

Side Street Studio arts was founded in 2013 by Tanner Melvin and Erin Rehberg as an outlet for the Elgin arts scene. Currently under the direction of Amanda Harris, Martinez, Melvin, and Rehberg, Side Street provides educational and creative resources and an accessible space, run by artists. Side Street's mission is to support the artist and artistic journey through collaboration.
