Symposium focuses on children's health and education

Elgin, Ill. - A one-day conference at the Elgin Academy will allow parents and educators an opportunity to learn from children's health and education experts from across the country.

The Health and Education Symposium will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the academy's main campus, 350 Park St.

The free event, presented by the academy and Advocate Sherman Hospital, will feature leading faculty, doctors and researchers in children's education and health. It is geared toward parents, professionals and children in the Fox Valley and Chicago areas.

Highlighting the symposium is Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, author of "The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age."

The internationally recognized clinical psychologist, school consultant, speaker and author has consulted with over 350 independent and public school, parents and students on a wide range of topics related to strengthening children's social and emotional development, shaping school culture, and deepening parents' connections to their children.

Dr. Larry Kosinski, gastroenterologist on staff at Advocate Sherman Hospital, also will speak during the event. He will discuss how to get a head start on developing healthy eating habits.

Other speakers include Elgin Academy Upper School Math and Psychology faculty member Gina Kietzmann; Deborah Pearce of Pearce Communications Group LLC, which serves as a communications consultant to businesses, school, health care organizations, government agencies and nonprofit entities; child and adolescent psychologist Dr. Ann Weller from Plum Tree Psychology Ltd. in St. Charles; and Heather Bragg, author and learning specialist at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles.

There is no charge for the event, but preregistration is required.
