  • While Blackhawks fans seemed to have fun in the snow and cold at the NHL Stadium Series at Soldier field, shooting in that kind of weather can prove to be problematic. The large snowflakes tend to throw off the focus of the camera. In this case you need to shoot a lot of frames as the vast majority of them will be out of focus. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

  • A single drop of water falls from an icicle as temperatures warm in Elgin. I got a little wet shooting this frame, standing almost directly underneath the large icicle, hoping it would not break free and come plummeting down on my head. I had to shoot a few hundred frames to catch the water drop in just the right place. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

The blue-headed bird is native to the northwest and is rarely seen in this area. When word got out through social media, the Fox River was lined with bird watchers.
