Exercising Both the Brain and Body at Friendship Village's Silver Games

Friendship Village's Sixth Annual Silver Games were the most successful to date, drawing 330 participants competing in 43 different events over the course of four days. The event features friendly competition for individuals ages 62 and over to encourage exercise of both the brain and the body. The Silver Games are held in cooperation with the Schaumburg Park District and the Campinelli YMCA, and also attended by residents of GreenFields of Geneva, Friendship Village's sister community. “While the primary focus is celebrating seniors, the games are also a great example of the fun things that can happen through community partnerships,” said Silver Games coordinator Jeff Rose of Friendship Village.

“We have so many great resources in our community with whom we are able to combine for the event.” The various competitions were held at Friendship Village, the Schaumburg Park District Community Recreation Center and Schaumburg Golf Club and Sports Center.

The Silver Games are developed for all ability, activity and interest levels. In addition to physical competitions including golf, fishing, floor hockey, water volleyball and free throws, the event also includes Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles and poker. “Brain activities and challenges are as important as physical ones. We develop the competitions with the objective of creating fun opportunity in which everyone can be included,” said Rose.

The 6th Annual Silver Games were open to the public. In addition to the various competitions, the Silver Games included continental breakfast, an Italian dinner at the closing event, and live entertainment.
