Stevenson surges past Maine W.

Kari Moffat scored 11 points, and Stevenson’s girls basketball team survived a couple of quality looks at the basket in the final seconds to win its second game in as many days, 38-37 over host Maine West in final-round action of the Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.

“We made a lot of good decisions down the stretch,” said coach Tom Dineen, whose Patriots improved to 2-4 and finished 2-2 in the tournament. “That’s encouraging.

Moffat earned a spot on the all-tourney team for a fourth straight year. Alex Elzinga, who scored 10 points, also made all-tournament. Stevenson overcame a 34-28 deficit after three quarters by outscoring theWarriors 10-3 in the fourth.

The Patriots won despite missing 5 free throws in the final period. Freshman Chloe Ekenberg provided a spark coming off the bench, scoring 6 points. Sophomore Taylor Buford also had 6 points.

“We’re learning,” Dineen said. “We’re getting better.”

Maine West’s Alexia Prosperi led all scorerswith 16 points.

Antioch 61, North Chicago 43: Paige Gallimore scored 19 points, and Megan Borries added 11, as the Sequoits won their North Suburban Prairie Division opener.

Freshman Kelly Johnson and sophomore Carly McCameron came off the bench for Antioch (5-3) to score 8 and 5 points, respectively. Johnson pulled in 10 rebounds, while McCameron had 7 boards and “forced several North Chicago turnovers with pressure defense,” Sequoits coach Tim Borries said. Abbi McIlhany also added 8 pointss.

Warren 48, Waukegan 15: The visiting Blue Devils bolted to a 16-3 lead after one quarter and then shut out the Bulldogs in the second quarter to lead 29-3 at halftime.

Kristin O’Brien scorded a game-high 12 points and also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Jamie Sterling aded 8 points, and Alyssa Phillips contributed 7 points and 5 rebounds.
