Architecture Textbook Features Student Drawings
The fourth edition of Rendow Yee’s textbook “Architectural Drawing: A Visual Compendium of Types and Methods” published this year includes work by College of DuPage students.
Mark Pearson, assistant professor of Architecture, was using the previous edition of the textbook in his Architecture Presentation and Portfolio class when the author contacted him.
“I had never been in touch with him before, so it was a surprise when he reached out to us,” Pearson said. “It’s the first time our student work has been featured in a textbook.”
Included in the textbook’s sections on “Drawing Exercises” are renderings from students Jesus Corral of Roselle, Brian Henks of Lombard, Andres Lemus of Bensenville and Will Prescott of Naperville. Bojana Martinic of Aurora and Damian Rozkuszka of Milwaukee are featured in sections regarding portfolio work.
Three separate pieces by Geunho Song of Elk Grove Village appear in the textbook: drawings of the Barcelona Pavilion and Barcelona Chair in the “Light, Shade and Shadow” chapter, and renderings of the Chicago Visitor’s Center Pavilion and his Chicago Inspiration project in the “Presentation Formats” chapter. Song earned his Associate in Applied Science degree in Pre-Architecture from College of DuPage in 2010 and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Architecture degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“I feel like I was lucky to be picked,” Song said. “The author who selected my drawings found something that could help him to communicate his ideas, so I’m happy to be included.”
Jane Ostargaard, professor and coordinator of the Architecture program, said work was selected as examples that demonstrate a high skill level.
“Having their work published is something our students can now put on their resumes,” she said. “It’s pretty amazing to see them listed alongside important architects and students from prestigious four-year programs.”
The current edition of the textbook is now being used in class. In addition, Ostargaard and Pearson both have assignments that are included as examples in an instructor’s guide that accompanies the textbook.
The College of DuPage students selected for inclusion in the textbook all transferred successfully into university architecture programs: Corral to the University of Illinois at Chicago, Prescott to UIUC, Henks and Song to UIUC, Lemus and Martinic to the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Rozkuszka to the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Song said COD’s program prepared him well for transfer.
“I still think about the first conversation I had with Jane Ostergaard when I went to register for business courses,” he said. “I was able to imagine my architectural career beyond COD. The faculty and the program helped me find my own creative voice in my own work.”
