Detours as I-90 bridge over Sleepy Hollow Road repaired

Sleepy Hollow Road/McLean Boulevard will be closed at the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway overpass for a week beginning Wednesday, Sept. 5, as crews repair the bridge deck and beams.

The roadway connects Sleepy Hollow to the north with Elgin to the south.

The road will be closed at 6 a.m. Sept. 5, and detours will be in place until Sept. 12. The underpass is too narrow to accommodate both workers and a lane of traffic, according to the Illinois Toll Highway Authority, which is heading up the project, so the entire section of road will be closed.

Northbound motorists on McLean should instead go east on Big Timber Road, north on Route 31 and west on Boncosky Road to reach Sleepy Hollow Road. Southbound Sleepy Hollow Road traffic should follow the same detour in reverse, tollway officials said.

In addition, westbound tollway traffic will be reduced to two lanes at the bridge from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, through 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, for bridge deck repairs.

Work includes repairs to the bridge beams and the bridge deck. The closure was coordinated with the city of Elgin, the villages of West Dundee and Sleepy Hollow, Dundee Township, Community Unit District 300 and the Illinois Department of Transportation. Roughly 4,000 vehicles use the stretch of road daily.

This year’s bridge repairs and shoulder widening on the tollway between Elgin and Rockford are needed to prepare for the start of the rebuilding and widening of the tollway scheduled to begin in 2013, tollway officials said.
