Lake Forest wins Vernon Hills tournament

Lake Forest’s boys water polo team overcame 5 goals from potent Libertyville senior Tommy Keefe to beat the Wildcats 13-9 in the pivotal round-robin game of Saturday’s Cougar Classic at Vernon Hills.

Each team entered the game with 3-0 Classic records.

LF (5-2) captured the championship behind junior John Baker’s 5 goals. Teammate David Hayes netted 4.

The Scouts scored the final 2 goals of the third quarter and the first 3 of the fourth after a Keefe goal made it 8-8 at 2:54 of the third quarter.

“Credit Lake Forest,” said Wildcats coach Ivan Munoz, whose short-handed crew beat Highland Park 14-7 Saturday morning and defeated the host school and Barrington in its first two Classic games Friday.

“Lake Forest,” he added, “stuck with its game plan. Lake Forest kept driving on us in the middle.”

Libertyville played without junior starters Eric Boynton and Alex Wang. Both had an academic commitment.

Keefe tallied a team-high 25 goals for Libertyville (3-1) in the five-team tournament, including 7 in a 17-5 defeat of VH on Friday.
