McHenry County Conservation District hosts 'Webby Wednesdays'

The McHenry County Conservation District is bringing exploration of the natural world to your home!

The "Webby Wednesdays" program utilizes the Zoom communications platform allowing education staff to immerse participants in a local savanna, prairies or wetland, and bring animals to life! Have you wondered about the landscapes you see throughout McHenry County? Let's get up close and personal with the local flora and fauna!

• What is a savanna and why are they so important to McHenry County? Find out at "Webby Wednesdays: Exploring Our Local Savannas" from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 23. Tour some local examples of this important oak-dominated ecosystem and explore savanna ecology, flora, and fauna.

• Why are wetlands so vital to our local ecology? What plants and animals are found in wetlands? "Webby Wednesdays" will be "Exploring Our Local Wetlands" from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21. Dive into the treasure trove of fascinating habitats and ecological processes of wetlands.

• Illinois is home to an abundant species of wildlife. Explore them from "A to Z" on "Webby Wednesdays: Animals of Illinois' Past" from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4. From slugs to snakes, cardinals to coyotes, most people are familiar with our fauna neighbors, but what about animals from the past? Learn about the wild horses, mammoths, giant sloths and more that used to call Illinois home.

• Prairies are the signature of Illinois, the Prairie State, but what makes these grasslands so unique? Investigate prairie ecology and the plant and animal residents all around you in "Exploring Our Local Prairies" from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Join online to learn something new about the landscapes around you. You'll be ready to explore your local natural areas with a new found interest and wanderlust! Program content is appropriate for ages 14 or older. It is free for McHenry County residents. Registration is required, register online at MCCD.me/WebbyWednesday.

McHenry County Conservation District currently owns and protects 25,600 acres of open space which provides wildlife habitat preservation, educational opportunities and recreational amenities for the citizens of McHenry County to enjoy. The McHenry County Conservation District exists to preserve, restore, and manage natural areas and open spaces for their intrinsic value and for the benefits to present and future generations.
