McHenry County conservation groups reach out to Latino communities

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, McHenry County Conservation District and Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge are collaborating on programs and projects with the purpose of reaching out to and connecting with Latino families and communities in McHenry County.

"I've had the pleasure of attending monthly meetings of Hispanic Connections Woodstock and The Defenders has brought successful recycling to their popular Mexican Independence Day celebration over the past three years, since its inception.," said Cynthia Kanner, Environmental Defendeers of McHenry County.

This year, the Defenders introduced the other prominent conservation groups in the county to Hispanic Connections Woodstock and together they organized a "Conservacion Conversacion" corner at this year's Mexican Independence Day held on the Woodstock Square Sept. 15. The event attracted hundreds if not thousands of adults and children alike. The organizations all had a wonderful time and had the opportunity to do activities with families and speak with them about all that they offer and do to conserve and protect nature and the environment in McHenry County.

One of the special projects the organizations are working on is a Bilingual Conservation Bus Tour that will visit four distinct conservation areas that are owned or managed by each of the four organizations.

The tour is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. RSVP by Friday, Oct. 11 to envirodefmc@gmail.com with the subject line: "Bilingual Bus Tour."
