Citizens' Climate Lobby to host panel discussion on congressional bill June 24

What can be done about the climate crisis?

On Monday, June 24, a panel of McHenry County Citizens' Climate Lobby members will lead a discussion of the bipartisan bill in Congress, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763). It will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room B166-67 at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act has bipartisan sponsorship in Congress with 38 co-sponsors. The act would implement fees on carbon emissions with rebates back to consumers.

The panel will discuss:

• Research indicating that the fee and dividend program can lead to effective reduction of 90% in carbon emissions by 2050 necessary to stave off the worst predicted effects from rising global temperatures from human-cause climate change;

• How the fee and dividend will affect consumers;

• And, how the act sets the stage for significant improvements to the environment and U.S. economy such as those proposed by the Green New Deal.

The program is co-sponsored by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, McHenry County College Sustainability Center and the McHenry County Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby.
