New A.A.S. degree program in firefighter basic operations seeks applicants

Interested in serving your community as a professional firefighter? The College of Lake County's fire science technology program is seeking applicants for its new A.A.S. degree in firefighter basic operations.

Graduates of the program are eligible for certification at the Fire Basic Operations level by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, according to Randy Justus, chair of the fire science technology program. Graduates are also eligible for licensure as emergency medical technicians by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

All students must complete the Introduction to Fire Science class as a prerequisite to being admitted to the program, Justus said. Students also must agree to earn the degree within two years.

In addition to the coursework, students gain practical experience by serving as interns for the Grayslake Fire Protection District. "Students will work in an active fire station and respond to emergency situations while following the fire protection district's rules and regulations," Justus said.

To apply, pick up an application packet from the Business and Social Sciences division office in Room T302 at CLC's Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. in Grayslake. Completed applications must be returned to the Business and Social Sciences division office by January 23, 2017 for a Spring Semester 2017 start.

The application process also involves a physical ability test, medical physical, drug screen and background investigation. Candidates may be required to take part in an interview conducted by CLC faculty and fire department representatives. A maximum of 16 positions are available per semester.

If admitted to the program, the student must agree to purchase about $1,500 of supplies, including uniform items, a fire turnout coat, pants, boots, hood and gloves.
