Rotary Club's donation saves needy senior from hunger

The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of DuPage County received a donation of $800 this week from the Rotary Club of Darien to sponsor a needy, local senior living in poverty, served by HSP's Senior Citizen Project. The Rotary has been an annual sponsor of one, or more, needy senior(s) in the program, living in the Darien area, since 2002. The donation will provide the senior fresh, nourishing fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, non-perishable food, and Pepperidge Farm bread for one year. The 121 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project receive monthly deliveries of 100 lbs. of groceries, which also include personal care items and paper products (paper towels, facial tissue, and toilet paper.) The seniors also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift, gifts at Christmas time, and much needed household items on their “wishlist.”

The Rotary Club of Darien's sponsorship of this needy senior is one way in which the club stays committed to the Rotary International motto of “Service above Self.” Since being chartered in 1974, the club has dedicated itself to serving those in need, both in the Darien community and abroad. In addition to supporting HSP, the Rotary Club of Darien is engaged serving the needy through a number of other initiatives including providing winter clothing and educational materials to local school children in need, providing college scholarships to Darien area youth, and supporting numerous local, national, and international non-profit groups. The club meets at 12:15 pm every Tuesday at the Guest House of Argonne National Laboratory in Darien.
