Board president, parent win in Glenbard race

A longtime Glenbard High School District 87 board incumbent and a Glenbard West parent who has often disagreed with district administration have won their bids for positions on the school board.

With all 138 precincts reporting Tuesday, board President Rose Malcolm had 7,392 votes, followed closely by Mary Ozog, currently a substitute teacher in the district, with 7,316 votes. Also winning election was incumbent Tom Trefilek with 6,762 votes, according to unofficial totals.

Incumbent Steve Sebby, who received 6,041 votes, won’t be returning to the board.

Ozog, 52, is a member of the Our Field, Our Town group, which has gathered petitions opposing the administration’s push to install lights at Glenbard West’s Memorial Field in Glen Ellyn. Ozog also led an effort to keep a popular honors class at Glenbard West that was eliminated as part of a plan to standardize curriculum across the district’s four high schools.

Malcolm, 56, who has been on the board for 12 years, supports the light installation, as does Trefilek, 60, who has been a board member since 2007.

The current seven-member board has delayed an official vote on the lights.

New and returning board members will take office in May.
