Prairie Ridge edges Carmel at Lake Forest

Carmel Catholic was in position to win the Lake Forest girls gymnastics invitational Saturday night.

The Corsairs landed a bit short, however.

Prairie Ridge's 146.125 edged Carmel's 146.000, which was its best score of the season.

"Holy cow, I didn't realize it was that close," Prairie Ridge coach Lee Battaglia said.

"You can't have three falls on floor and expect to win," Carmel coach Sarah Mikrut-Doyle said. "Floor should be a marquee event for us. We had the opportunity to win this meet.

"It's hard to walk out with second place, but we definitely had improvement and look forward from here."

Amber Mirski won the all-around (37.41) and her sister Kristin placed third (37.3) for the Corsairs. Amber also placed first on beam and bars, scoring 9.4 on each event, and was third on vault (9.61). Kristin was second on bars (9.3), third on beam (9.2) and fifth on floor (9.4).

Carmel's Jen Zeller took third on bars (9.25).

"Knowing I had a fall on floor, I could do better," Amber Mirski said. "We still had a good performance. This is probably one of our best meets, but we haven't hit our full potential. We'll wait to our next meet."

Prairie Ridge had a strong meet in three out of four events but had problems on bars (34.635).

"One of top all arounders got hurt on vault," Battaglia said.

"It took away the energy we had. It's no excuse for the bars and it upset them a little bit."

Jenny Covers led the Wolves, taking second in the all-around (37.375). Covers captured vault (9.8) and took first on floor (9.7), as well. Erin Guthrie second on vault (9.65) .

St. Charles East (139.45) finished fifth behind Lyons (144.685) and host Lake Forest (141.15).

Stephanie de la Torriente was fourth in the all-around (36.9) and took second on both floor (9.6) and beam (9.3).

"It was better than usual," said de la Torriente, who wasrecovering from being sick over the holiday break. "I felt good out here. Things felt good and I had a lot of energy. When I was sick I had no energy and couldn't get out of bed at all. It's good to be back."

During warm-ups Lake Park's Kelsey Coleman dislocated her elbow.

"She did it on the uneven bars and it put a damper on the meet," Lake Park coach Keith Matune said. "She's our No. 2 girl and it hurt us. I'm proud of the way our girls came together like a family."
