Cook County All-Area boys volleyball
Max Deevy | Barrington
Deevy fought through a variety of injuries in 2009, showing an amazing amount of heart in helping to lead the Broncos to an extremely successfull season. The senior, who had to endure an hour in the training room before each practice and game to be able to compete, was superb with 405 digs, a passing efficiency of 2.38, and a serving percentage of 94. "Max played through a lot of pain this season," said Barrington coach Rob Ridenour, "and his commitment and work ethic were incredible. He was our defensive leader and could be counted on to extend rallies."
Joe Duda | Buffalo Grove
Intense defensive specialist Duda was a go-to player for the Bison, and showed unbelievable amount of heart and desire in his 4 year career. This season the senior had 362 digs, was 440-of-456 on serve receive and served up 8 aces. "Joe covers a lot of ground for us," said BG coach Matt Aiello. "He takes over in big games defensively. Without him, our offense would not be as dominant as it is. Joe's passion for his team and the program is something I'll always remember."
Drew Fisher | Conant
Fisher not only excelled at the setter position but was impressive in all phases of the game as the senior enjoyed a remarkable 2009 season. The intense player was performed at his best against the top area competition, and his superlative court awareness allowed him to earn a spot on the Mid-Suburban League all-conference team. The personable star will be missed by coach Steven Peter and teammates alike.
Weston Genovese | Rolling Meadows
With several of his teammates bitten by the injury bug this season, Genovese stepped into a leadership role and excelled. He finished with a kill efficiency of .406, hammered 210 kills and had 60 blocks. "Weston came a long way from last year," said Meadows coach Janet Opels. "He's been a go-to guy, and you can tell from his stats he fulfilled that role. His play really stepped up when injuries occurred early in the season. He was a solid force at the net for us."
James Hoffman | Prospect
Hoffman came into his own this season, becoming the Knights go-to player and earning co-MSL East player of the year honors. The senior hit with a .339 kill efficiency, hammered 245 kills, had 44 blocks and 130 digs. "James could consistenly put the ball down," said Prospect coach Mike riedy.
"he does everything well - serving, attack, digs, serve receive, you name it. He's even been known to toss up a decent set or two. James is easily one of the best players in the history of Prospect volleyball."
James Isaacs | Fremd
Isaacs helped lead the Vikings to an Mid Suburban League championship with his outstanding 96.7 serve receive percentage. The senior passed 356-of-440 and recorded a team high 325 digs. "JImmy emerged as a team leader on and off the court," said Fremd coach Curt Pinley. "He is someone who took on the attitude of 'give me the ball'". Most of our offensive success this season started from his pass."
Peter Lauterbach | Conant
A lot was expected of the hard-hitting 6-foot-3 senior prior to the start of the season, and the powerful OH delivered in a big way in earning Mid-Suburban League all-conference honors. Lauterbach excelled in all phases of the game in helping lead Conant into the upper echelon of the MSL West in 2009 with his leadership and all-around court skills.
Nick Leiding | Barrington
Leiding was the heart and soul of a Barrington team that tied for 1st in the Mid-Suburban League West this season with a 9-1 mark. He excelled at every facet of the game with 112 kills, 45 aces, a passing efficiency of 2.39, 225 digs. Leiding was aced only 5 times all season. "Nick was one of our primary passers, " said Barrington coach Rob Ridenour, "He worked extremely hard in the off-season to change positions and added 6 inches to his vertical. Nick set a great example for our younger kids both on and off the court."
Randy Lorenz | Barrington
Lorenz enjoyed a stellar season in 2009. The tall, powerful hitter had the ability to take over a game at any time, and his spectacular play earned him Mid-Suburban League West player of the year honors. "He carried our team at times," said Barrington coach Rob Ridenour of the senior who slammed 352 kills, had a .302 hitting percentage, and served 41 aces. Lorenz also excelled at defense with 203 digs. "Randy ended the season with the most kills of a player I have ever coached," said Ridenour. "The most impressive thing about him is how hard he has worked to improve his defense and passing throughout the season."
Cody Matchen | Hersey
The senior who coach Jodi Blazek describes as an "amazing defensive player" led the Huskies with 351 digs, succesfully received 475 serves (another team high) and averaged an outstanding 2.41 on serve receive. "Cody was our defensive star," said Blazek. "He was a captain and leader by example. He always gave 110 percent and seemed to cover the entire floor with his defensive play."
Calhan Nolan | Fremd
Nolan was an impressive athlete who played with desire and intensity in every match. The senior led the Vikings to a MSL title with 197 kills and 16 aces. Nolan excelled on serve receive as well with a 190-of-222 mark. "I was impressed with Cal's court presence," said Fremd coach Curt Pinley," whether it was attacking in the front row or digging the ball in the back row. He brought a dynamic to our team and program that few athletes posess."
Anthony Pilolla | Leyden
Leyden enjoyed a successful season and defensive specialist Anthony Pilolla was a big reason why. The Eagles libero contributed in a big way with 357 digs, recorded 56 assists and was a force from the service line with 54 aces on the year. "Anthony has the ability to run our serve receive and defense so well, that it's like having a coach on the floor," said Leyden coach Dave Sebald. "He has the ability to read the play on the other side of the net and make the necessary adjustments."
Kyle Schroeder | Schaumburg
Schroeder was a team leader who was always in the right place at the right time on the floor for the Saxons. The senior led the team with 301 digs, excelled from the service line a 90 percent efficency rating, and his 94.2 percent serve receive ratio was tops for the Saxons as well. "Kyle was a warrior on the court for us, " said Schaumburg coach Kyle Reid. "Opposing teams quickly found out that they had to avoid him on serve receive."
Michael Smearman | Fremd
Smearman was a model of consistency for the Vikings this year, setting every ball in every practice and every game from the first to the last. The player who Fremd coach Curt Pinley calls "the reason we were as successfull as we were this seaon' handed out 717 assists in addition to serving 10 aces. "Michael's work etchic and decication were unsurpassed on our team," said Pinley. "He was voted our team MVP this season, a well deserved award."
Greg Turk | St. Viator
Turk was integral part of the Lions success this season, excelling on the court and showing outstanding leadership skills with the younger Viator players. The senior set two all-time Viator volleyball records (256-of-262 from the service line for a 97.7 percentage, and career serving percentage of 97.4). Turk finished the year with 568 assists."Greg's work ethic was outstanding," said Viator coach Chris Boylan. "He always wanted to improve individually, but more importantly, tried to improve all 13 members of his team."
Jim Voy | Maine West
Voy was not only a stupendous player on the court for the Warriors, leading the team with 32 service aces, 56 blocks and 175 kills, he was also an outstanding leader.The senior, who will attend the University of Illinois in the fall to major in mechanical engineering, was able to inspire his teammates to perform at a higher level. "Jim encouraged the development of each member of his team," said Maine West coach Randy Tiller. "He brought out the best in everybody, including his fellow seniors."
Jack Welter | Hersey
The hitting and vocal play of Welter lifted the Huskies to a stellar season. The senior was a versatile star who hit a team high 249 kills, averaged more than 3 kills per game, served 33 aces, had 232 digs and 29 blocks. "Jack was a great all-around player for us this year," said Hersey coach Jodi Blazek. "He was our captain and was a fantastic leader for our team."
Dan Wichmann | Buffao Grove
Dan was the man for the Bison, taking over the team this season, calling the offense from day one and leading BG to a second straight Elite Eight appearance. The senior finished with a stellar 820 assists in the regular season and hit 41 kills, had 141 digs and 14 aces. "Dan is one of the most athletic players I've ever coached," said BG coach Matt Aiello. "In my opinion, based not only on statistics but also on talent, he is one of the top setters in the area. He runs the offense and keeps all of his players involved."
Kevin Wolter | Prospect
Wolter had a lot of responsibility thrust upon him in 2009 came through with flying colors, leading a powerful hitting team and becoming an integral part of the Knights offensive system. And the best part is coach Mike Riedy will have the junior, who dished out 769 assists and, served up 20 aces back for another season. "Kevin made all the decisions as to where to set the ball - he took lot on his shoulders and carried the burden well. It was a pleasant surprise to see him step into a leadership role. He is a joy to coach."
