Dunn, Iowa Central stop Harper
One of the longest-running rivalries in the Midwest Football Conference was renewed on Saturday afternoon as Harper College hosted Iowa Central Community College.
The Hawks gave their fans something to cheer about before Iowa Central prevailed 39-14.
The Tritons struck first, taking their opening drive down to the Harper 1, where Blooomington native Darrelynn Dunn scored. Iowa Central was stopped on the 2-point conversion try.
After forcing the Hawks to go three-and-out, the Tritons took a 12-0 lead on a 53-yard pass from Kyle Twait to Dustin Walls; once again, the Harper defense steped stopping a Tritons conversion attempt.
In the second quarter, the Harper defense came up with multiple stops.
Earlier in the week, Harper coach Eric Waldstein had hoped his team would run the ball at the Tritons. Instead, the Hawks’ aerial attack shined on this afternoon.
Sophomore quarterback Stuart Augustine went for a carrier-high 304 yards passing on 64 attempts.
Augustine was able to find Robert Dickey for a 25 yard-touchdown pass to cut the lead to 12-7 in the second quarter.
The Tritons offense again erupted when Dunn broke two Hawk tackles on an 85-yard touchdown run. The teams went into the locker room with the Tritons leading 19-7.
The only real bright spot for the Hawks in the second half was when Augustine hooked up with Robert Douglas Jr. on a fade pattern for a 13 yard touchdown.
The big play of the drive came when Augustine found Deonte Jackson on a ball that was thrown between two Tritons defenders but a shade behind Jackson, forcing him to make a diving 32-yard catch which cut the Iowa Central lead to 19-14.
All the good vibrations the Hawks were feeling after the Douglas touchdown would fade to black in the second half.
Once again it was Dunn doing the honnors from 5 yards out off of left tackle. He scored one more time befor the day was done, and Chris Sanders added Iowa Central’s final touchdown with 2:53 to play.
