Girls soccer: Northwest all-area team

Lucero Aguilar Leyden

Eagles striker finished season with 9 goals and 11 assists to earn her second all-WSC award, and first all-sectional, all-area honors in just her second season for coach Robert Fowler. "Lucero is an amazing athlete and competitor who has a real passion for her sport, whether in a match or during training sessions," says Fowler, who feels his supersoph's work rate and desire are key reasons for the Eagles turnaround from a 6-win club in '09 to 11 this season. Two-years totals are 19 goals, 18 assists.

Michelle Calmeyn Elk Grove

Breakout season for this three-year veteran, who scored 22 goals (10 assists), including game-winner at Conant, and a pair of key helpers in victory over Fremd. "Michelle's hard work in the offseason is the biggest reason for her success this spring, as was her tireless work rate and ability to strike at any moment," said coach Dan Klaus. Strong in the air, and in the tackle, while adept at holding up the ball to bring others into the attack, this junior became one of the deadliest finishers in and around the area.

Sarah Christy Schaumburg

Four-year star for Saxons would rightly earn her second straight all-MSL honor, before her first all-sectional honorable mention and all-area recognition following a 12-goal, 5-assist season to run her career stats to 26 and 11. "Sarah has been a physical presence and our most consistent scorer, and her powerful shot and strength will missed by our program," says coach Greg Charvat. The Millikin-bound striker made full use of her body, fending off markers with ease, while routinely using movement and a nice touch to exploit chances for herself, and others.

Kaitlin Chiero Conant

An important role player last season in the Cougars run to a fourth-place state finish, the junior became an instant hit in coach Jason Franco's first-11 to become the leading scorer (11 goals, 7 assists) while proving to be a opportunistic, natural striker in her second year on the big club. "Kaitlin works so hard while out there, and at times, she was the lone target up top for us, yet still able to cause problems," said Franco. Quick on the ball, and with plenty of speed afoot, all-MSL striker can change directions with the best of them, or wriggle free in close effortlessly.

Caroline Condon Barrington

Perhaps one of the most clever midfielders in the area, this three-time all-area, three-year star shined brighter than ever in her final season in the Fillies run to an MSL Cup title and a supersectional. "Caroline has been our best 1-on-1 player the past two years, and maybe in the area," said coach Ryan Stengren. "She works so hard each and every match, and she always seems to step-up when we need her the most." Six goals, 8 assists give University of Denver-bound senior 15 and 15 during the past two years as she brought an abundance of dribbling skills and creativity to the proceedings.

Amanda Filian Palatine

After a superb season last year along the back line, coach Willie Filian moved his best defender into the middle, and she would become the disruptive force in the center of the park, much as she had as a sweeper in 2009 when she collected her first of two all-MSL, all-sectional and all-area honors. "Amanda was the spine of the team, she kept us organized, got into the attack (4 goals, 5 assists), allowed us to play with a little bit of rhythm, and would still mark and defend while we played with three midfielders," said her father of this tenacious tackler and 80-minute warrior.

Kelsey Foss Conant

A great reader of the game, the two-year backline starter has the exquisite positional sense to snuff out attacks in their early stages. "Kelsey was a rock-solid defender all yearlong, who was a good ball-winner, tackler, and terrific team leader, who played nearly every minute for us," said coach Jason Franco. Composed, tough to beat, the junior is also a bit of a set-piece specialist, witnessed by meaningful serves or shots from a distance (4 goals, 3 assists), including goals to help defeat Neuqua Valley and Schaumburg.

Julia Fredian Hersey

You would be hard pressed to find a more athletic keeper than Fredian, who helped lead the Huskies to a final four state appearance in 4A basketball and a third consecutive MSL Cup berth. "Her reaction-type saves left us with many memories, and her ability all throughout her career to read crosses and balls served into the box were second to none," said coach Brad Abel. A four-year starter, three-time all-MSL, two-time all-sectional and all-area, had 15 shutouts this year and ranks 10th in state history with 53 in her career. She had a 0.60 goals-against average and will attend Iowa.

Kelli Hubly Elk Grove

Her great technique on the ball and ability to thunder up and down either flank or in the center of the park helped the Grens stay in the MSL East title race into the last week. "Kelli is extremely versatile, either in the middle, up top, or if we need her, along the back, and because of this, she can make a big impact for us during a 80-minute match," said coach Dan Klaus. The regional team pool player has a fine range of passing and is a respected and dangerous goal-scoring midfielder, validated by her 8-goal, 8-assist, all-MSL season, including the Grens first win since 2002 over Fremd.

Emily Hyde Barrington

Fillies suffered power shortage when their top goal-scorer was out for nearly three weeks (mono), but would return to give the club minutes in their sectional semifinal victory over Huntley. "She was easily our best finisher, and a player who strikes with either foot, and demands respect from our opponents because of her speed on the ball and ability to create space and chances for herself and her teammates," said coach Ryan Stengren. Found the back of the net 11 times (14 assists) last season, then collect 13 goals (7 assists) despite her extended time off.

Amy Johnson Barrington

There's no doubting the 2010 MSL West Player of the Year, who is an aggressive, pacey right back that raids forward to support the offense, is sure in the tackle, exquisite with the freekick, and composed beyond her years. Three-time all-area and all-MSL defender. "Amy is a lockdown defender, who has become as good as any at her position in the state, and has to be considered as one of the best to ever come through this program," said coach Ryan Stengren of his captain, who would earn all-state, all-Midwest honors from the coaching community.

Kathryn Korff Hersey

Four-year starter had big shoes to fill in Kristen Gierman, but the hardworking Hersey captain made up for the loss with rapid improvement to become a player many coaches said had the biggest physical presence than any other. "Hands down, Kathryn was one of the best all-around defenders in the area," said coach Brad Abel. The Illinois-bound senior was a key figure in a stingy (16 goals against) defense, and with her exceptional close-down speed, ability to go forward and piercing set-piece offerings led to second all-area and MSL East Player of the Year honors.

Elise Kotsakis Fremd

Two-year starter, who was second-leading scorer last season (12 goals) in run to second place in 3A, became top target for coach Steve Keller, who watched this junior announce her arrival as a first-class finisher. "We had to rely on (Elise) a lot this season, and she came through by scoring 17 goals (3 assists) even with two or three defenders draped all over her," said Keller. Powerful, and strong on the ball, this all-MSL striker was most dangerous when running at players, and in the final third, where her deft touch on the angle would find its way into the back of the net.

Ariana Kulinczenko St. Viator

Silky smooth all-sectional, all-ESCC senior made transition from midfield to central defender so neat and clean to help put her club among the elite in Class 2A. "She was the final piece of our puzzle when we moved her to the back, and once we did, she would immediately solidify that position to make it the strength of our ballclub," said coach Mike Taylor. Eager to play her final year for Taylor after three years away with the Eclipse soccer club, had 4 goals and 6 assists and will play at Louisville.

Ann Marie Lynch Rolling Meadows

In just her second-year with the big club, this sophomore already began to wear the captains arm bands along with Alex Partipilo. "After the move of Alex to the back line, Ann Marie was asked to take on more responsibility, and when we did, she embraced the role like a four-year veteran, and has already caught the eye of several college coaches," said coach Jeff Adkins. With her terrific size, well rounded play, and speed on the ball, the first time all-MSL midfielder is one of the few who can dribble from 18-to-18 without being stopped as she had 9 goals and 5 assists.

Chloe Majkowski Wheeling

With so much youth in the lineup, this two-time all-area keeper would face a barrage of shots like no other, yet continue to play with a high level of professionalism through it all. "Chloe never complains, is completely team oriented, humble and hardworking, and on top of that, a terrific talent at her position," says coach Darren Llewellyn. This two-sport star (basketball) combines superior vision and leaping ability, which is used to easily take balls out of the air, especially in a crowd. Loyola-bound three-year star finishes with 15 career shutouts and three all-sectional awards.

Meghan McGrath St. Viator

A key member of the Lions wonderful run into the final four, this four-year starter is an old-school backliner, who not only keeps everything in front of her, but also uses her aerial ability to own the box with uncontestable headers, while becoming a serious threat on the other end on a set-piece opportunities. "She is our strongest marking back, who takes the role seriously, and leaves it all out there for 80 minutes, and always at a high level," said coach Mike Taylor of one of his captains who had 7 goals and 5 assists.

Katie Naughton Elk Grove

Coach Dan Klaus describes this national team pool player as a coaches dream and one of the best defenders in the state. A hybrid central defender, who is brilliant going forward, combines pace, vision, playmaking skills, as well as superior set-piece delivery that wowed opposing coaches. "Katie does it all in the back, she directs, keeps things organized, is a tough 1-on-1 defender, and best of all, she is a terrific person and leader on our team," said Klaus. First-time all-MSL, all-sectional pick has all the attributes to move up on the national scene in the near future.

Allison Norenberg Fremd

Perhaps no other keeper in the area was as dominant during the postseason the last two springs than the first time all-area, MSL and sectional captain of the Vikings. "Allison raises to the occasion when she is needed the most, making one big save after another, and far too many to even begin to list," said coach Steve Keller. Her ability to turn away point-blank strikes or to pull shots out of the back of the net while suspended in the air are a joy to watch. Had 10.5 shutouts in 2010 and 31.5 in career.

Alex Partipilo Rolling Meadows

Injuries would force the move of the Mustangs' top goal-scorer to the back line, where this three-year star instantly became one of the best at the position as the combination of technical and tactical knowledge made her an absolute joy to watch. "Alex went from captain to leader this year when she suggested she play sweeper instead forward, where she could have easily scored 20-plus goals for us," said head coach Jeff Adkins, of his reliable back, who could provide surging runs at a moments notice. All-MSL pick had 13 goals, 5 assists.

Andrea Perkins Hersey

Work rate, courage, determination and heart were the trademarks of the Huskies captain, who was also a four-year starter, and with her all-area mates Kathryn Korff and Julia Fredian), another two-sport star who led the basketball team in assists. "Andrea gave everything to this program and trained and played as if each day was her last," said coach Brad Abel of the two-time all-MSL and all-sectional Wisconsin bound midfielder. Would harass her counterpart on one side of the ball and proved to be the sparkplug whenever the attack needed a boost.

Stephanie Pouse Schaumburg

Pound-for-pound, one of the most tenacious defenders around, with a never-say-die attitude which helped fuel the Saxons near-run to a spot in the MSL Cup. "Stephanie has been our best marking back and overall defender for three consecutive seasons, with a ferocity unmatched, yet still capable of leading the team in assists with 11 coming out of the defensive position," said coach Greg Charvat. The two-time all-MSL, sectional and all-area pick attracted supporters from all sides with her hard work and passion as an unselfish star.

Courtney Raetzman Conant

In just her second year, this sensational sophomore has wowed audiences and coaches alike who awarded this national team pool-player a second consecutive all-state honor to go with another all-area spot. "I might be a little biased after watching Courtney everyday, but she just makes everything look so easy, and has to be one of the best all-around players in the state," said coach Jason Franco. The two-time all-MSL star is a tireless worker and technically and tactically astute, she still managed 9 goals and 3 assists despite missing two-plus weeks with an ankle injury.

Danielle Romano Fremd

This all-state and two-time all-area defender has made her imprint ever since coach Steve Keller brought the East Carolina-bound sweeper up with the big club midway through her freshman season to help a state runner-up finish. "There are a lot of things you can say about Danielle as a player, but the bottom line is she is a terrific young person, and just a class act, and a player that we've come to rely on during her four years in our program," said Keller.

Taylor Skala St. Viator

Three-time all-ESCC junior became the most explosive finisher in the area with 38 goals and a virtuoso postseason performance which saw this all-action striker record double-digit scoring during the Lions run to a second-place Class 2A finish. "Taylor has the perfect mental makeup to be a big-time scorer, because she never gets down when she misses, and she will just keep working to get her shots, and when she does, it usually gets into the back of the net," says Mike Taylor. Two-sport star (basketball) can score in bunches with her vibrant style, many in spectacular fashion.

Kelsey Steenstrup Schaumburg

Ever since the Saxons moved the then-freshman up late last season, this center-midfielder has grown by leaps and bounds to become the leading scorer (14 goals, 8 assists) this spring, and one of the top young players at her position in the MSL. "Kelsey was a workhorse for us in the middle all-season long, and with her experience as a cross-country runner, she is fit, has a great work rate, and a very bright future here in our program," said coach Greg Charvat. All-MSL in first full year.
