Harper cruises past Elgin Community College

After what Harper men's basketball coach Tony Amarino called “a great week of practice,” the Hawks basketball team took what it had learned and applied it to game time in Tuesday's 79-57 triumph over Elgin Community College (1-3).

“We had great intensity in the first half,” said Amarino.

Freshman Shonnon Barfield led the Hawks to the victory with a game-high 24 points, helping to make up for a subpar showing in the season opener against Judson College's JV last week.

“He was nervous,” Amarino said of Barfield's play against Judson. “Tonight he was in the flow (of the offense), he hit some shots early and gained confidence.”

The Hawks soared to a quick 11-0 lead before Marquis Lodell made a pair of free throws to get the Spartans on the board. Lodell finished with 4 points.

On the next four possessions, the Hawks responded as Barfield and Garett Gatz (Conant) would both made 3-pointers and freshman guard Kemill Long (Hoffman Estates) made a basket.

Gatz finished with 14 points and Long had 10.

Barfield finished with four 3-pointers.

“My teammates were looking for me I just made shots,” Barfield said.
