Lakes' Vanderwall blanks Libertyville
Travis Vanderwall dazzled Libertyville hitters and Lakes' hitters got the job done, as the Eagles downed the Wildcats 5-0 in a North Suburban Conference crossover on Friday.
Lakes improved to 14-9, while Libertyville fell to 12-8.
With blustery conditions and bad weather quickly approaching, Vanderwall's arm provided the lightning and Paul Kukulka's bat provided the thunder.
Vanderwall allowed only 2 hits and struck out eight in his complete-game shutout. Kukulka had hits in his first 3 at-bats, scored 2 runs and drove in a run.
In Kukulka's fourth at-bat, he was intentionally walked with runners on second and third in the fifth. Kyle Noon then delivered a two-out, 2-run double to give the Eagles a little breathing room.
Libertyville's offense was able to get only two runners as far as second base.
Mundelein 13, Antioch 4: Colin Franklin went 3-for-3 with a double for the Mustangs (17-5) in the NSC crossover.
Mike O'Donoghue, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter over 4 innings to earn the win, and Matt Risdon both had a double and single.
For Antioch, sophomore Adam Warner had 2 doubles. Andy Green doubled as well.
Warren 16, Round Lake 2: Scott Heelan homered, tripled twice and drove in 6 runs for the host Blue Devils in the NSC crossover.

Heelan went 3-for-3. Pat Kenney had 2 doubles and finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for Warren (21-3). Bodine was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Jeff Johnson pitched 3 innings for the win, striking out five and walking none.
Lake Zurich 9, Grant 2: Ryan Baartmans homered and singled, and Danny Johnsen allowed 1 earned run over 5 innings for his team-leading fourth win of the season, as the host Bears won an NSC crossover that was called on the account of darkness in the top of the sixth.
Anthony Orlando also hit a home run for Lake Zurich (13-11), while both Justin Russell and Tim Bavester doubled and singled.
"We pitched and hit well," Bears coach Gary Simon said. "Defensively, we need to still keep working at it. We are showing progress, and only because the kids have a great attitude, which will take us a long way."
Grant's Tyler Gorsi hit his second home run of the season. Jordan Villareal had a double, and Lucas Moss contributed a single and an RBI.
Zion-Benton 6, Vernon Hills 4: Scott Kempel homered in the Cougars' NSC crossover loss.
