Saturday's Fox Valley roundup
The Huntley girls softball team got a measure of revenge on Hononegah Saturday.
The Red Raiders swept a nonconference doubleheader on the road, beating the Indians 5-3 and then 7-6 in nine innings. Hononegah knocked Huntley out of the postseason last year in the sectional semifinals.
In Game 1, Illinois-bound Jenna Mychko pounded out 2 home runs and had 4 RBI while going 3-for-3 to lead the Huntley offense. Taylor Larson picked up the win in the circle, allowing 7 hits with 1 strikeout and 4 walks.
In the nightcap, the teams went to the international tiebreaker in the ninth inning and Huntley outscored Hononegah 4-3 to come away with the win. Larson struck out the side with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory.
Randi Peterson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Larson had 2 RBI and Tara Lycos had a double and an RBI for Huntley (6-3). Larson struck out eight and walked five to earn the win, her fourth of the season against two losses.
Jacobs wins two: Jacobs downed Glenbrook North 9-7 and Leyden 4-1 at the Palatine quad. Amber Livingston picked up the win against Glenbrook North and also had a triple and 2 RBI. She struck out eight and walked two. Kara Arceneaux (3B) and Sarah Jacobson (2 RBI) each had 2 hits for the Golden Eagles. Against Leyden, Marissa Lombardo struck out seven and walked only one to earn the win. Kelsey Peterson (RBI), Morgan Harvey and Arceneaux (2B) each had 2 hits for Jacobs.
Elgin 1-2 at PR: Elgin went 1-2 Saturday at the Prairie Ridge quad. The Maroons lost to Prairie Ridge 11-1 and Cary-Grove 13-3 before finishing the day with a 9-4 win over Grant. Kelly Patchett drove in Elgin's only run and was the losing pitcher against PR, while Brandi Hernandez had 2 hits against Cary-Grove. Kellee Conquest was the losing pitcher. Patchett picked up the win against Grant, allowing just 4 hits. Mari Aguilera had a home run and a double and Hernandez doubled for the Maroons (4-10).
Cary-Grove 2-1 at PR: The Trojans downed Grant 5-1 and Elgin 13-3 before losing to host Prairie Ridge 7-0 at the Wolves' quad. Against Grant, Lindsey Efflandt had 16 strikeouts to earn the win for the Trojans. She was also 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run. Taylor Dunne and Sam Baratta each had 2 hits with doubles. Against Elgin, Emma Gaulke struck out six and allowed just 2 hits to earn the win. She also had 3 hits, including a home run and a triple, and 2 RBI. Efflandt was 4-for-5 with a triple and 2 home runs while Beth Maloney and Baratta were each 2-for-4. Efflandt suffered the loss to Prairie Ridge, allowing 10 hits with 5 strikeouts. Dunne had a triple for the Trojans (6-3).
Hampshire sweeps: Grace Jakubowski had 3 hits and 2 RBI in an 11-3 win in Game 1 and came back with 2 doubles in Game 2 as Hampshire swept a nonconference doubleheader from Round Lake by scores of 11-3 and 18-6. Jen Hurst tossed a 3-hitter for the Whip-Purs in Game 1. Katelyn Bruscato and Christina Potempa each had 2 hits. In Game 2, Bruscato threw a 1-hitter and added 2 hits herself. Emily Moser had 2 hits for the Whips (3-5).
Streamwood swept: Downers Grove South coach Ron Havelka won his 500th career game as the Mustangs swept Streamwood in a nonconference doubleheader by scores of 11-4 and 9-1. Amanda Patterson and Jenna Szabo were the losing pitchers for the Sabres. Jen Mellenthin had 2 hits for the Sabres in the opener. Streamwood is now 4-7 and has lost 7 straight.
Bartlett splits with Batavia: Callie Dennison pitched a 5-hitter with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts as Bartlett downed Batavia 5-0 in Game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader. Batavia came back to win the nightcap 7-2. Nicole Palmer had a double for the Hawks in the opener, while Kelsey Warrick (2-for-4), Megan Morales, Katie Popovich, Kaylyn Zierjke and Lisa Matsie all drove in runs. In the second game, Zierke had a double an RBI and Nicole Beck doubled for Bartlett (6-2). Tori Burke suffered the loss in the circle.
St. Edward falls twice: St. Edward (4-2) allowed 11 unearned runs and had 19 hits including 5 triples but lost both ends of a nonconference doubleheader at Ottawa Marquette, 3-2 and 8-3. BreAunna Medinger suffered the loss in the opener, despite allowing just 3 hits. She struck out five and walked five. Kristi Knott and Sarah Field (2 RBI) each had triples for the Green Wave. In Game 2, St. Edward had 13 hits but could only plate 3 runs. Field took the loss in the circle but didn't allow an earned run as the Wave committed 4 errors. Tarah McShane (3B) and Kali Kossakowski (RBI) each had 3 hits and Maddie Kerr added a triple. Medinger and Kelsey Richmond added RBI.
