Wild pair of wins for St. Viator
When St. Viator’s baseball team started play Wednesday afternoon it was immediately in a game-threatening jam.
The Lions’ East Suburban Catholic Conference game Monday was suspended because of darkness in a tie and Carmel had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning in Mundelein.
They resumed play in Arlington Heights and junior Chris Myjak got out of the jam and then hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 10th as the Lions (12-9, 6-2) held on for a wild 13-12 win. The regularly scheduled game was shorter and less stressful as they won 14-2 in 5 innings.
In the suspended game, Viator took a 10-9 lead when Kevin Patzke homered in the top of the ninth but Carmel tied it on a homer in the bottom half. Myjak’s blast in the 10th made it 13-10.
Carmel rallied with two outs to get within a run and had runners at first and second but Viator sophomore center fielder Joe Rossi, who was called up to the varsity last week, made a running catch in the gap to preserve the victory.
Robert Romano went 4 innings in the regularly-scheduled game and Nick Prazuch had a bases-clearing double.
Rolling Meadows 6, Barrington 5: Meadows (12-7, 6-4) is now the hottest team in the MSL as it rallied from a pair of deficits for its sixth straight victory. Paul Volkman went 6 innings for the win and sophomore Jack Milas left the tying run at second for his first save.
Matt Hendricks had 2 doubles and 2 RBI and Joe Kropp was 2-for-3 with a triple for Meadows. Aaron Foley and Macray Poidomani had 2 hits for Barrington (4-20, 3-6).
Hoffman Estates 4, Elk Grove 3: Junior Mark Roberts took a shutout into the sixth inning as Hoffman (9-12, 4-5) won its third straight and ended a six-game winning streak for Elk Grove (11-7, 5-2) in the MSL crossover.
Kevin Grudzinski homered and went 2-for-3 and Brian Cvitkovich homered for Hoffman.
Prospect 8, Schaumburg 4: Ben Menich improved to 5-0 and Luke Bergman homered and doubled as Prospect (15-5, 6-2) moved back into first place in the MSL East with the crossover win.
Matt Molini, Kurt Donner, Peter Bonahoom, Jack Landwehr and Brian Bauer also had 2 hits for the Knights. Matt Brancato and Roger Lane doubled for Schaumburg (9-5, 2-4).
Palatine 9, Hersey 2: Kurt Becker homered and David Schalla got the victory for Palatine (12-11, 3-3) in the MSL crossover at Hersey (10-9, 4-4).
Conant 4, Wheeling 2: Joe Belmonte homered and doubled twice for Conant (3-13, 2-6) in the MSL crossover. Peter Durbin homered for Wheeling (5-11, 2-6).
