Schaumburg tighten up West race
Schaumburg made things a little tighter in the Mid-Suburban West softball standings on Friday.
The host Saxons scored 2 runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to edge first-place Conant, 4-3.
The Cougars (23-2, 12-2) are now 1 game ahead of Fremd (22-3-1, 11-3) and 2 in front of Barrington (23-10, 10-4).
Conant and Fremd meet today in Hoffman Estates at 3 p.m.
The Saxons (12-9, 6-7) received a 6-hitter from junior Alyssa Lancaster (6-6-1), who notched the win over junior Briana Cavin (18-2).
“The girls played an amazing game,” said Saxons first-year coach Ellen Stoddard. “It was a great win for our seniors on their Senior Day.”
Senior Jessica Cook went 4-for-4 and drove in 2 runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Brianne Lingl went 3-for-3 for the Saxons.
“Alyssa pitched great with 5 strikeouts and no walks,” Stoddard said.
Lancaster was also 2-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
“The girls played with intensity today,” Stoddard added. “They were diving all over and really brought the timely hitting to pull out the win. I am very proud of how they played today. They did a tremendous job.”
Barrington 14, Hoffman Estates 2 (5 inn.): Barrington sophomore Loren Krzysko (4-for-4, 8 RBI) belted two home runs, giving her a single-season school record of 11.
The second one was a two-out grand slam in the fourth inning.
“To be the only athlete in the 43-year history of Barrington softball to hit that many homers in one season, that’s an amazing accomplishment,” said Fillies coach Perry Peterson, who watched Krzysko surpass the former record held by Ashley Berggren (1994) and Michelle Levin (1990), who each belted 10.
The 8 RBI by Krzysko were 1 shy of the school record set by Chrissy Lund on March 19, 1999.
Other top hitters for the visiting Fillies (22-10, 10-4) were Colleen Shandley (3-for-4, 3 runs), Liz Owen (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Kiley Dolezal (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
Dolezal (18-7) got the win with 2 strikeouts in 3 innings. Emma Wood struck out one in the final 2 innings.
Emily Fett (2-for-3) and Taylor Mann (2-for-2) led the Hawks (6-19-1, 3-9).
Hersey 8, Rolling Meadows 3: Alex Tinaglia went 3-for-4 with a double for host Hersey (8-15, 5-8), which also received multiple-hit games from Kim Ferraro (2-for-4), Haley Henriksen (2-for-4, double), Val Burke (2-for-3) and Mallory Eichhorn (2-for-3).
Sophomore Sarah Platt went 5 innings for the win, striking out two.
Hersey junior Angela Lazzeretti came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth and did not give up a run.
Elk Grove 12, Wheeling 0: (5 innings): Elk Grove’s Krista Soesbe (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and Becca Walz (2-for-4, 4 RBI, double) each hit homers over the fence at Wheeling and teammate Jessica Balzano (3-for-3) had an inside-the-park homer.
The Mid-Suburban champs (25-3, 14-1) received a 2-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks from junior Andrea Starr, who also doubled.
Freshman Becca Maher and junior Tori Liewergen each went 2-for-3 for the Grens.
